Hi, I am new to all of this, so I am looking for some help. I would like to buy a German caravan, small, and I am having problems finding anything in England. Don't want oven or big toilet or double axle. I have been looking at caravans in Germany and they are A LOT cheaper than here. The problem is that I keep getting conflicting advice on the ease to have it serviced over here , since there aren't many Hobby dealers and virtually none of the Fendt ones!
Does anybody know if a caravan imported from abroad still has the same warranties as one bought in England? Would it have to be serviced by a specific Hobby/Fendt workshop, or a NCC approved one will do?
Many thanks.
Anesta
Warranty work is likely to be an issue; the industry tends to work on "supplying dealer" the one that does the warranty, others wanting little to do with things. It is not anything like with a car and even here getting warranty work done on a privately imported one "difficult".
Servicing is not difficult, main dealers probably will not want to know but small "independents" will. All the kit like boilers fridges heaters, chassis brakes etc will be the same as used by UK builders. If you bend caravan panel getting them from Germany can't be slower than from UK builders!
On the continent vans can be of more basic spec as you appear to want, so that reflects in the prices. We found directly comparing like to like German vans purchased over here were of quite close pricing; far closer than others had suggested; most differences are rooted in differing specs.
With two German vans our call on the warranty has been all but nothing, just a window with manufacturing defect that took 4 weeks to source after agreeing issue via sending photos.
Not sure about the supplying dealer and warranty work. We bought our van new from a dealer nearly 100 miles away.
There hasn't been that much wrong with it but we've had warranty work carried out no problem with 2 different more local dealers.
Anesta, I have a small German caravan for sale. It's a Dethleffs S-Light 2009 model. If you need additional information I have it advertised on this Forum, under the "free caravan adverts".
Just a thought - buy from overseas and the law of that country regulates your purchase and they may not have such good consumer laws as we have. Further, if there is something wrong with it and you have to chase the seller its a long way to the nearest court
