Leave the wife at home.. Personally..I dont mind the odd spider in my tent--if the spider is any good at his job there shouldnt be too many other bitey things in there!
If the wife insists on coming with you..you could try putting conkers in the corners of your awning--apparently spiders wont go near them---thats what the mrs says anyway--and I wont be arguing with her or she might turn me into a handsome frog or something.
Be careful if you are using aerosols in there...not good for tents etc-somebody will be along shortly to advise further.
