I was wondering what to do do/say about constant barking dogs since 8am, a regular weekend occurrence, on the site where I have a permanent pitch.
The dog-owners seem either oblivious or they enjoy it and expect everyone else does too. Certainly when I have gone out and asked for them to stop the noise their reactions are nearly always hostile or at best "what do you expect me to do, dogs bark".
This is an adults only site and we pay a premium for, in theory, not having screaming children shattering the peace. Yet a barking dog at 8am is actually worse than an excited child.
So canine lovers, please advise a non-dog lover (although not a dog-hater either), what should I do and what would you do?
Firstly if its a seasonal pitch, why would you have to sell up, cant you just move your van to a quieter place?
Secondly, as a dog owner/lover I would never allow my dogs to bark like that its natural but not nice. I bring my dogs into the van when they start to bark. Its usually on their part, a bid for attention. I would most definitely put it in writing to the site owners, that you intend to withdraw your van and therefore depriving them of your cash. You sound as though you have been very patient, but some dog owners are not considerate and I would not want to hear constant barking either. There are anti-bark collars on the market that could work but if the dog owners are hostile then I cant see them putting one on the dog. In my opinion a walked, fed, loved dog will only bark when needed. I doubt this dog is getting what it needs from its owners.
I hope you can reach a resolution soon.
many thanks, the owners are aware of the concerns of several seasonals re dogs, but i think their attitude is adults only sites attract older dog-owners
i wish more people were considerate like yourself
it's nearly time to renew the fee so think i will definitely raise the issue again
It is a shame that you're thinking of moving your caravan becuase of inconsiderate neighbours. I've got 2 dogs, luckily they don't bark unless someone comes to close and stop when I tell them. I hope you can find a solution.
Dogs bark for many different reasons and therefore it is not easy to establish what it is each time and stop them. Anti-bark collars don't actually work.
My dog barks if she hears children shouting in the distance. She has had a fear of children since a puppy when they all seemed to want to run up to her with arms waving and shouting, 'Ooh look, look, a little fluffy puppy'. She didn't approve.
She also barks if anyone approaches the garden or walks past on the street outside. If it persists longer than reasonable she gets brought indoors although I sometimes allow her to continue as the more she realises that the person passing isn't a threat the less she seems to do it, and some people now stop to speak to her over the gate.
She also barks when in the garden and wants to do a poo. I think it is to establish that there is nobody else around and she can poo in peace.
There are, as I said, many reasons and it is not always good to continually stop a dog barking as it could make them frustrated and destructive. Think how you would feel if you were told to shut up every time you spoke.
Having said all that a continually barking dog can certainly be very annoying for both owners and neighbours and needs to be controlled. The campsite owners should certainly warn the owners and even remove them if the barking is persistent and doesn't stop. If it is a residential site you could try the environmental health (noise abatement or whatever it is called) who will give you a tape recorder to record the noise and can take action if it is considered unreasonable, although unfortunately they rarely consider it unreasonable.
Dogs continually barking is always a difficult one... the owner is correct...it's what dogs do. How it is controlled is the difficult bit.
I have two dogs, and they do bark if left outside by themselves. All kinds of things set them off. However, barking constantly annoys me so they come inside if they bark.
I don't understand owners who allow their dogs to bark continuously.
a barking dog is a bloody annoyance.. the site has banned children because some consider them an annoyance all it needs to do is ban dogs for same reason.. the same logic applies..
dog owners will defend their pooches and so will the parents of less than well behaved children.. but if some people go caravanning for piece and quite they are better off without ether..
an anti bark collar did work for my sons old english sheep dog.. some may consider them cruel but i think they do work.. i dont have any young children or a barking dog so consider me a bit biased.. :)
It would annoy me too, and I also have a dog. She doesn't bark constantly though.
If you get no joy from the owners with this one, I think personally I would move. You are not getting any pleasure or peace and quiet where you are at present, so there is little point in renewing your fees.
I'm a Dog Handler and take my 2GSD's everywhere with me and although I'm a dog/animal lover, nothing p**ses me off more than a constant yappy dog! I have found over the years it's the little bloody ankle snappers, that are always yapping and love to try and wind my 2up as they pass by, very annoying.
Just my two penneth, I would be speaking to the owners and letting them know in no uncertain terms that they need to get a grip or "do one" as it's not on. Don't see why you should have to give up and move on, move the problem! Good luck.
I agree with jax, your there to enjoy yourself and if your not because the site owner wont do anything about it, move sites. there are loads of sites available and now is the time for renewal.
i do find it sad that you mention dogs and worse than an excited child in the same sentence
"it's the little bloody ankle snappers, that are always yapping and love to try and wind my 2up as they pass by, very annoying."
that perfectly describes the little yappy pair that live across the road from me..
the odd thing is their elderly lady owner is a local councillor who would be (and is) down on any other kind of anti social behaviour like a ton of bricks.. he he
all it needs to set them off is another pooch owner to walk past the garden gate.. he he..
But aren't dogs supposed to bark when anyone approaches the gate...that's what dogs are for. My dog is a 'bloody ankle snapper' if anyone enters the garden uninvited. She would be nothing but a walking $h1t machine if she didn't earn her keep
She has actually been in the garden for the last two hours and I keep having to check on her because she is so quiet so she isn't a persistent barker. When I just went outside to bring her in for the night she was standing watching the neighbour 'walking' her pedigree cat. The cat sometimes comes into my garden but my dog allows her without a word...in fact the cat is more aggressive than she is. But, if anyone comes into the garden uninvited they had better be wearing ankle boots.
I hate persistent barking, I have a dog that rarely barks, in fact mainly when there is a horse on TV!! yep and if a pig appears she really goes off on one!!
Take her on our walk and if a dog barks whilst we are out she stands still and refuses to budge for a few minutes, she is a rescue dog and doesn't like other dogs. Although she does bark when the elderly lady that lives opposite us walks past wearing her woolly hat!
I would certainly try the site owners again, surely they could do something, and you can't be the only person to complain.
