We will be going to the show looking to buy a caravan up to the value of £30. If you had to pick the top 5 makes that we should target which would they be? I am afraid that we will get completely confused if we do not stick to a few brands to concentrate on. If we were looking for a car we would know exactly where to go. We are looking for stability, and well made solid high reputation vans. Not yet sure of single or twin axle. We will be spending a year touring UK, France, Italy and Spain. Thank you folks.

We owned an Adria van, very well made and are gaining share in UK as they are the only European manufacturer to make UK models with the door on the correct side. New Adora looks great and offers twin axle length on a single axle.

We now have a Bailey and have been pleased with it so far. Twin Axle is both a blessing and a pain, tows very well but a pain fitting both Alko wheel locks which is a requirement of all insurance companies. It means jacking the van up every time you park it so you can line up the 2nd wheel. Bailey have a great choice and offer a lot for your money. Shop around as these vans vary greatly by dealer, over £2k difference on our Bologna.

All UK built caravans are much of a muchness regarding build quality. All caravan makes share much the same makes of running gear, interior fittings & appliances so little difference between any of them. I don't think there are many more than 5 makes of UK built 'vans anyway. Possibly German built caravans have better build quailty but not many German makes have UK distribution/service networks. Hobby do so certainly worth a look.

So to answer your question, go for the layout that suits you best for the use you intend to put it to.

I hope you dont get dragged into this foreign caravans are better than british, its just nonsence and faults develope on all brands of caravan.
you will find lots of foreign caravan forums on the internet and they all follow the same pattern as the british forums, and they all devolope the same faults.
When you go to the show take your time and when you have looked at all the vans you are interested in, have a break.
you will then know witch one you realy want and not the one that someone else thinks is better than another.
lucky you, have fun and enjoy the day.
If you have the car to pull it and want stbility it has to be a twin axle.

went to last years scottish show looking to change and didn't fancy anything that was there.did a bit of research and found that the adria got the practical caravan magazine award for customer and dealer satisfaction award.so went to the only dealer in scotland and was blown away with the adria adora isonzo.bought it there and then, then went out to find a tow car to pull it.its 1800kgs,but the new 2015 has lost weight is now 1700kgs and cheeper.its on a single axle and tows a dream behind my land cruiser even in high winds.we take 3 collies with us and the floor space is massive with the nearside island bed and rear bathroom. we love it.

We are going to do the same thing, we have written a short list of different layouts, and will try them all to see which we feel will suit us best, taking lots of notes (don`t forget notepad and pen)

We will then take a break discuss our findings and go back and check on any questions we have. We feel that being able to see all the major brands side by side will help us to make a final decision.

Hope you have success, and find the right van for you.

one of the posts above, is the kind of post, i was trying to make a point of.

Practical Caravan magazine award for customer and dealer satisfaction ????? there is only one dealer in Scotland???

Make your own decision on what you see at the show, you will know the one you want when you see it.

Hi when we went last year and couldn't make our mind up one of the dealers offered us tickets to get in the next day, allows some clear reflection and breathing space away from the noise and sales men. Obviously only helpful if you are within a decent driving distance!
Happy shopping !

Hi Lizzylee, we were in a similar situation as you back in 2007 - wanting to spend a year touring in Europe, and not knowing anything about caravans!  We bought magazines, joined the Caravan Club, went to the NEC show, as well as The Lawns show in Hull, and also visited several dealers and looked online.  It really pays to do research, as it's a big expense and you want a good, solid, reliable van if you're going to be living and travelling in it for a year.

Our personal choice after all that - and I stress it is personal, and might not suit everyone - was a German van, although we also liked Adria.  It's important to find a layout that suits you, again bearing in mind you'll be spending a lot of time in it - what is fine for a summer holiday in France, and a few weekends in England, might not work so well full-time. We chose fixed twin beds, to avoid having to climb over each other in the middle of the night when visiting the loo!  It needs to be solidly built, and also well-insulated for winter (it can get cold even in Spain.)

Since then we've visited 18 countries (not including the UK) and spent two full years travelling, with other shorter trips in between.  We're still totally happy with our van.  It's just been serviced and there's no sign of damp, the only major problem we've had was a delaminated window.  But it's stood up to a heck of a lot of wear, in all weathers, on some appalling roads, and though it no longer looks pristine (rather like us) we love it.

One further point - the pitches and access roads in some European campsites can be a bit tight for a twin-axle.  Our van is 7.61 metres long, which is roomy enough to be comfortable, but easy enough to manouevre with a mover.

Good luck, and enjoy your travels!
