drill a small hole at the end of the crack.. this relieves the stress point and will stop it spreading.. it will spread if you dont do this..

Do you know what... I can't believe how minute these Cracks are.. they look like tiny scratches an the surface??? ... I would never have guessed that these could turn out to be a major problem... OK .. what size drill do I use.. and what do I fill the holes in with..
And have you had this sort of problem before??

a short while back i took some ancient looking reflectors off the front of my van.. it has a fibre glass roof with front and back panels of the same materiel..

the reflectors were just above the join between front panel and roof.. underneath one of them were two tiny almost invisible cracks.. each crack had a tiny hole drilled at the end of it.. the hole is standard treatment to stop cracks spreading.. it gets rid of the stress point which is what causes crack to keep getting longer..

this was done many years ago i would guess by a dealer to hide these two tiny cracks.. maybe when the van was quite new.. its now twenty years old..

you cant see them unless you know they are there and look close..

we are talking just a tiny hole.. i filled mine (two holes) with paint the same colour as the van just a little dab.. the dealer had hidden them with the reflectors..

once that hole is drilled the crack wont spread.. you may get more of them appear around the same area if they do catch them quick drill the hole and forget about them.. they will not leak..

the hole must take out the exact end of the crack.. the holes are easy to hide and fill if you think you have missed the exact end of the crack drill another one..

the cracks are in the hard outer glaze finish of the fibre glass they are cosmetic more than anything else.. they mostly start at the outer edge of a panel and spread inwards.. they dont need repairing just stopping and hiding..

ps.. i own a "plastic" boat.. if you really want to know more about "cracks" check out boating forums..

a full repair would mean grinding out the visible crack and filling and finishing.. if the cracks are just tiny ones the full repair is not worth doing..

I'm thinking of buying a Ranger 550/6 myself, but concerned about the cracking issue. Does anyone know whether it affects 2008 models as well? Thanks.

i was assuming the panels are fibre glass.. if they are a ABS plastic they still need drilling but are more likely to go right through and not just be surface cracks..

plastic can be hot welded but how to do it without it looking unsightly i havnt a clue..

The panels are plastic... Just a question for you... how far do you go in with the drill...

right through the outer panel skin.. the end of a crack has very high stress loads on it which is why once started the crack spreads.. its like tearing paper.. the hole removes the stress point and sort of spreads it over the bottom half of the hole..

i doubt it will leak but without the hole it will continue along its merry path.. i think all you can do is stop them spreading fibre glass can be repaired with ABS plastic i aint so sure.. the proper repair would be a new panel..
