Was having a chat to a life long friend, and mentioned we are thinking of buying a caravan. She lives in Cornwall and has offered us a chance to give it a try!

She has a touring van and has said if we booked a site near to them, they will tow the van to it, meet us there, show us how to set up, and how everything works, so we can try before we buy.

so I have booked the site, and we are ready to go and enjoy the experience, feeling very excited, 1st for this great opportunity, and because although we have kept in touch, haven`t actually seen her since I left my home town in 1990!! we went all through school together from nursery and we were in nearly every class together.

Think there might be a small hangover at some point during this break.

Hi
We have just purchased our first touring caravan after many years tenting and trailer tenting and folding campers.
The only advise I would give as you are not actually towing the van there is to make sure your comfatAble with towing a van.
It's not for the faint hearted. I have towed many a trailer..trailer tent .. Folding camper but a caravan is a different kettle of fish... Done correctly and you have no problems but you have to know what your doing and read up on weights and loading advise.
Sorry to be doom and gloom but you need to be able to tow the van and get there safely.
After all that I would say go for it because you can't beet the feeling your own van gives you ( trust me I said not for me ) and I love it now.

Thanks Pencamper, we always said we would never have a caravan!

Both Hubby and I are booked in for a caravan towing lesson to see how we feel.Have done our homework about weights etc, and have decided to change my car for a nice heavy 4x4 if we decide it is for us,(Hubby has one at the moment, but he has just ordered a new car)
We have done loads of research, and off to the show next week, the only thing that has held us back is making sure that a caravan will work for the whole family, so this is our chance to make sure it will.

There is a list on t'internet. Can't find the link, sorry. But it was something like this...

Top of the list is a drug dealer who offers you "something to get you through the day"
Second on the list is a pimp who offers you "my best girl... no charge".
Third on the list is a life long friend who offers to tow their caravan to a nearby site, meet you there, show you how to set up, and how everything works, so you can try before you buy.

These people are clever, manipulative, and downright dangerous, and it will end up costing you... money, certainly, and quite possibly your sanity, your dignity, and the love of your friends and family.

Just sayin'.

You're the first person i've ever come across thats linked buying a caravan to drugs and prostitution.

Yes, the friend could i say 'could' be taking them for a ride. But, given they dont have a tow car, or know anything about caravans, it may be that the friend is a decent sort and wants to help them make a decision before buying. You wouldnt get this from a dealer!

You missed the wink, I say "the wink", didn't you Mick!
And I didn't mean to infer that anyone was taking anyone for a ride. More just a downward spiral to... Oh, never mind!

In all seriousness, Wibsey, I hope it all goes well for you, and that the reality lives up to your obvious hopes. It's a great opportunity to have a "Free trial", so hat's off to your old friend.

Let us know how the trial run goes... and I'll hopefully see it, although I don't pop in this side of the forum very often... which is probably best!

Good luck... and enjoy
