This is the first year we have had an awning up - a dorema. We havent been at the van since the summer and arrived yesterday to find a nasty surprise. A horrible smell - mould or mildew potentially and the roof is entirely spotted inside with it.
What have we done wrong and how to we solve it or cant we? We had left the ventilation flap open. We did clean the roof before we left as it had bird poo on it but with plain water and a brush - the type you use on your van. Have we caused this?
Any tips please, they would be gratefully received.
Do people leave their awnings up all year and if so what precautions do you take, How do you let it breath? We have an awning skirt and a couple of ground sheets down on top of gravel
Not sure but personally I would not leave an awning up for that long this time of year, all sorts of thing can happen strong winds etc. If you have to leave it up I would lift the caravan skirt and ground sheet to allow more air flow.

Sounds like you have had regular condensation on the inner roof, if so this will cause the problems you have.
Cleaning the outer roof should not give you a problem on the inside.
The outside is getting wet constantly from the rain and then drying in the air, the inside is staying wet from condensation
The answer sounds like you need more ventilation, how you can do this im not sure.
My awning stays up on a gravel pitch from march till the end of September and so far have not had this problem.
I do not use any groundsheets but i do use some interlocking foam tiles just down the middle where we walk
If your roof is polyester you might be able to clean it with a anti bacteria spray cleaner once taken down
The precautions i take, i bought a set of alloy poles from the internet and modified them to fit to my awning so it now has 12 extra poles and the inside of the awning looks like a space frame, sounds a lot but its hardly noticeable
Mildew is caused by condensation, you need more ventilation in your awning,to clean it you can use milton cleaner or as I do,use Wet and Forget,it's sold by B&Q and although you wont notice it,it will stop any further mildew spores from growing
The cleaning products will, as mentioned kill the spores, but pretty sure you ain't going to get rid of the marks that will be left.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Not enough ventilation as mentioned, warm days then cold or chilly nights then mild dew in the mornings.Mine stays up from march till end sept also, and no probs,A friend on site as a Dorema,He wasnt at his van as much this year, But in the morning when I walked pasted is van you could not see inside of the awning, The awning windows were running with condensation,As for the marks inside now.. they wont come off completely.
------------- Roughing it in style at Calloose caravan and camping holiday park nr St Ives.(seasonal pitch)
Its not a hangover, its wine flu!
Thank you the general consensus seems to be that we need more ventilation in there. Any tips on how to achieve this. Taking the skirt out was a good one but not one we can really do. It was an absolute bugger to get in (its an unusual skirt and the bead is IMHO too flipping big we tried to enlarge the channel without much success) and so would be nightmare to do each time we are here.
If we lift the floor mats at one end will this help or hinder? Any ideas.
I have just taken my seasonal awning down, I put plastic on the hard standing, then wood and then a carpet and the awning stays bone dry inside, as soon as I took up the flooring and left it just on the hard standing, in the morning the awning roof was totally sodden (inside I mean).
So I am not too sure what the answer to your problem is but all I can say is sealing up the floor area completely should stop it
a new removable skirt will cost less than a new awning, its a must ,clean with 1 part milton to 10 parts water and reproof, get a good airflow and you are sorted
