We will choose grass over hard standing now, sick of not being able to get the pegs in and we certainly have a few to choose from. some sites the stones are just too big and too deep.
We like grass but mainly stay on hard standing especially when not summer months.
Hard standing cleaner . Not always dry though we were on one that flooded in heavy rain. But no mud in the caravan.

We have tried both now when we first set out we with the van we went for hard standings and found this to be Ok for myself and she who must be obeyed putting the awning up was never a problem however since the introduction of our grand daughter to caravanning she is now 18 months and been away 3 times now this year with us, two weeks during the summer on a mini grand tour of Yorkshire and Northumberland being the longest and with her being a toddler to be honest we are leaning towards grass more if she falls down no nasty gravel or concrete to scrape knees or noses just soft grass that in her limited words give a boo-boo that only needs a quick kiss and all is well :).
On our last trip out we did not put up the awning I bought a couple of extra wind brakes we never usually put these up as we don't like building a "wall or barrier" between us and the pitches next door but have found you can make a fantastically large play pen around the van so the little one can be playing out side with the door open whilst you are busy in the van with no fear of her wandering off etc.
I say each to their own but if you are taking a toddler I would go for grass.
