Maybe make a Bolster type pillow at the head end using the bits removed from the mattress, then tuck any spare duvet or bedding into the fold at the front like they do in some hotels?

We push the mattress back this lifts the folding bit at the head up. Then stack the pillows on that pulling the bedding up over it. Looks neat!

we have 1 in our adria isonzo, plenty room around base of bed , no need to alter matress, as van is 2.45metres wide

The transverse beds ive seen are where the end bit pushes back so you can get past, but at night can you get past the bed if the bathroom is at the rear,if not you are no better off than a bed along one side,I think they are more suited to the wider vans

Ours has ample room with the bed pushed back, a squeeze to get past with it extended but ok. The bed is just long enough for me, as I am 6' 1". Very comfortable bed though.

Make up the bed as normal and don't bother with pushing it back. After all how often do you have to pass the bottom of the bed?
