Hi All,
I have been lurking in the 'Trailer Tents' and 'Camping under canvas' sections for some time....until tonight when I became the proud owner of a circa 1970 Sprite Alpine T!!
She is in great condition although in need of some TLC - a great excuse for some springtime meddling on my part!
Having looked online I can't see much in the way of resources yet - my first task is going to be restoring the wall mounted gas lantern. Attached is a 'Calor lighting burner maintenance' sheet but unfortunately it makes no mention of the spare parts required (globe and mantles to start with). My question to the good people of UKCS is does anyone have any knowledge on the subject of Calor gas lanterns and the availability of spare parts?
Thank you in advance - I intend to get some photos going showing the job as it proceeds!
Best regards,
Innes :)

Hi Innes. I have had two Sprites, many years ago. First I had a 1963 Alpine, and later a 1966 Musketeer. Both great vans in their time. I made many modifications to them, including fitting 12 volt electrics and a pumped water system. Many happy family holidays with those vans, my kids grew up with them.

I look forward to seeing your photos, and wish you well in your project.

Best Regards,
Colin

We had a van with gas lighting when we were kids. I'm 65 now. I remember the mantles didn't last long once they were used. They became very brittle, almost like dust, which fell apart quite often when towing.

It was a 1955 paladin made from hardboard.

Yes I remember my parents van when I was little. The gas lights just didn't work well and didn't travel well. Hope all goes well with your van.

Thank you everyone for the wishes and good information! Those links are very useful - thank you, I seems I will be OK for mantles, just need to find a nice globe to go on now (after I check it all works of course!)
I will get some photos up tomorrow after work - and will try an update as often as I can as we go through the work. I'm sure I will have many more questions as I go through!!
Happy New Year to everyone - enjoy the evening those that aren't working!
Innes

And there's these old camping lights still going strong.

Not to mention the old tilley lamps.

Yes, we have a few Campingaz portable lanterns and I did start quite a collection of pressure lanterns some time ago - there are so many benefits in my opinion over electric options.. Hence my wish to restore or if necessary replace the gas lamps within the van!

This thread is bringing back happy childhood memories of caravanning with my parents in the 1960's........the smell of the gas and the pop! pop! popping! Dad trying to "straighten up the mantle cos so many times it burnt on one side only!!!!!
Happy days, hope you build some amazing memories for yourself.
