We carry our caravan spare in the boot of the car, along with a small bottle jack.

"When on a 2 week trip i carry 2 spares."

based on that logic when on a four week trip you would carry four spares.. ;)

me i settle for just the one plus a decent pump and a repair kit and its stashed in the front locker..

if i had nose weight problems i would fit an under floor carrier.. luckily punctures are not that common.. i had one this summer but it was the first for a number of years.. it was an old screw that had been in the (Truck) tyre for a long time and went down slowly overnight.. this did prompt me to carry a decent pump and repair kit.. i was lucky being as i had not checked my spare for six years or so.. amazingly it still had enough air pressure to get me out of trouble..

it also prompted me to get new set of truck tyres.. he he..

I put mine on the floor in the middle of my van in transit and keep it underneath the van when on site.

Dont be silly. I would refit the one with the slowest puncture but rotate it so the flat bit was at the top

I do usually carry a jumppack/compressor. Never needed it for my car other than when swapping batteries, But its saved a few other people in various carparks.

Its about 9 years old now so i wonder whether the battery would start my diesel?

I am obviously conscious of what else I put in the front locker but not really a problem.

We had a 2001 Elldis Whirlwind (MTPLM 1160kg) which had the spare wheel in the front locker. I towed it with a VW Golf estate, the tow ball weight of which was 75kg max. Getting the nose weight down to 75 kg made the van skittish, and I usually ran at 85 kg., which made it stable. Legally wrong, I know, but the design parameters have a safety margin of anything between 3x and 5x the stated spec. so, technically, there was no danger.
I think the old Avondale method of fitting the spare under-floor from inside the van takes some beating. With care, and use of sensible plastic wrapping the problem of handling a dirty spare in the van wasn't a problem - the only objection I have heard for phasing out this method.
Bertie.

i have an earlier avondale with the spare and gas at the front.. it has what i would call a more pointy nose shape.. a kind of follow on to a separate locker on the front.. later ones have a more upright front with the spare inside and the gas locker near the axle..

i would guess the spare set in the floor was dropped because of cost.. it being cheaper to use the alko chassis mount contraption..

i run around 85 to 90 kg nose weight which if the tow vehicle can stand it makes for a more stable two..

one thing i am sure of.. if i ever do get a puncture getting at the spare wont be a problem.. :)

i also fitted a kojack jack but that was more about general servicing than punctures on the move..

I use an electric scissor jack. With a rubber blut cut out and shaped for the axle.

Well i did have a rubber block it seems to have gone walkies.

Have to find another lorry with a bit of its rubber bumper hanging off

Didnt having the spare in the floor cause other issues? Floors tended to flex or fail more often?

i cant see why it would cause problems if done correctly.. maybe it wasnt.. bunging the alko contraption on was definitely easier for the makers.. i would think cheaper as well..

i like mine in the front where i can get at it if need be..
