Question

I have a Oximiser 3800 which is capable of charging the leisure van on my caravan. What i want to know is can it be used whilst the van is plugged into the mains using the built in charger in the van. I cant seem to find any information on this

I leave ours plugged in all the time during the winter. I've fitted an electric heater in the shower room and turn this low so it only comes on if it is close to freezing. This protects the toilet from freezing. We go away during the winter so it is good to have everything ready to use.

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

You will not want the oximiser and the internal charger connected. One or the other and check the chargers max output voltage. If it goes above 13.8 then don't use it.
That will cause the battery to gas and the fluid level will drop over time.

Even with the best charger that keeps it below 13.8 it will still lose some electrolyte over time, if left on 24/7 check the level monthly and top up with distilled water.

You may have to peel the sticker off to get to the filler caps but they are there. So ignore any labels saying sealed for life.

Its not sealed and will have a shorter life if not topped up. Dont overfill it though. Get a decent torch and look for the level markers inside the filler ports.

I opened the door to our caravan yesterday and could smell a horrible smell , on investigation I found it was coming from uder the bench (battery compartment side) I opened the battery compartment and was greeted with a horrid smell , yup the battery had cooked and acid was ontop of the battery , The mains hook up on the caravan was left powered up since last summer , looks like its just cost me in excess of £100 for a new battery , Wont be leaving the mains on perminant in the future , will be fitting a timer socket to have the mains coming on for a few hours a month ,

Our storage facility has no opportunity to hook up to an EHU ...

So, I bring battery home, and charge it once a month.

No choice for me ... but interesting reading!

I also keep ours plugged in all winter. I also have a bit of heat on to keep it from going foisty. Never had a problem.

Brother-in-law boiled his battery by leaving it on, an expensive misunderstanding! However we did have a motorhome with a built in system that prevented this.

I have fitted a battery isolator switch, with the switch turned off there is no drain on the battery.
I forgot to remove my battery over the winter but on thursday when I collected my caravan there was no problem using the motor mover

I am with others on this, my caravan is plugged in all the time apart from when it is on the road or a ferry, the battery is in its sixth year having moved it from another caravan 4 years ago. So is this about the quality of in built chargers or the quality of leisure batteries?

My Swift has a 40w solar panel which keeps the battery at full charge even through winter, but provided one's charger is a smart, 3-stage minimum device all should be well 24/7.

I've just replaced my battery after 4 years, but it was very cheap to begin with and I accidentally completely flattened it on a weekend off-grid by leaving the entertainment system on, not realising it drew over 5 amps.
