Hi
We are booked to go away to Chatsworth caravan club site in a few weeks time and I am concerned about the bridge over the river around the Chatsworth estate.
It's on the main road into Chatsworth near the garden centre end approaching from Matlock.

Has anyone used this approach and got over ok. ?
I have a large estate car and caravan and worrying about bottoming out.

The only other way around for me is up to chesterfield then over to Baslow.

Thanks for any advice

I live in the area, firstly, caravans are not allowed to tow through the estate grounds of Chatsworth house, not just because of the narrow humped back bridge near to the garden centre, but the approach road through Rowsley past the entrance to the Peak Village shopping outlet can often be congested with parked cars outside the railway cottages for some considerable distance, rendering the B class road a single track width with two way traffic, and inevitable needs for having to back up into someones driveway entrance, or a long wait for the opposite oncomming traffic to have a break in it. Even solo, we try to avoid this road when visiting Chatsworth from the south along the A6, especially at peak times and when the cottage residents are parked up and home from work.

You are much better to approach by driving through Bakewell town centre which is fairly easy, crossing the river using the Bakewell bridge, and following the signs for the site from there, heading towards Chesterfield, which will keep you on decent A class roads right down to the site entrance down by the island signposted Chesterfield to the Right, and Hathersage to the Left.

Dont forget to try the Chatsworth farmshop, a little expensive, but well worth a visit, just about the best farm shop in the UK, top quality and a really wide variety of tasty treats to be sampled.

There's nothing to stop you towing on the B6012 only a weight limit of 7.5 tons on the bridge which has traffic lights so I cannot see a problem. The road by the cottages at Rowsley is bad but never had to reverse yet.
Been on much worse roads with all types of vehicles.

Thanks

I will go through Bakewall as I think the bridge will cause us a problem and I don't want to start reversing the thing into tight spaces.
I don't mind reversing it and also I don't know the width of the bridge either.

I am ok with going through Bakewall I just didn't want to go up the M1 or the A61 to chesterfield on a Friday afternoon.

I believe the latest revised ruling is not to tow any kind of trailer through the grounds of the estate. The rules were updated when they installed measures to help stop people driving onto the grasslands with any kind of trailer, to protect livestock, and discourage theft of livestock and poaching.

A lot of damage used to occur before these measures were put into place, and many animals were injured when hit by speeding veichles in the area. The road through now contains more cattle grids, speed restrictions, and low knocked in wooden stakes that line the edge of the road. Only authorised estate veichles are allowed outside of these markers and onto the grasslands, and the way they are fitted would cause considerable damage to the underside of any car or trailer that managed to clip them either intentionally or by accident. The humped back bridge is about 8ft wide, but the traffic lights approach lanes are set slightly off centre to allow oncoming traffic to pass more centrally over the bridge, which also has quite a steep apex. A unit maywell suffer grounding problems due to this.

The Bakewall route is by far the better route to take to the Chatsworth CC site, its a lovely area to explore, our grandkids love feeding the trout and ducklings in the river on a warm summers day in the town centre.
