Just showing my lack of knowledge here, but as ive posted about before, bought an older caravan, cold water only but going to connect the pump for the first time this weekend, what can i pull through the pipes and taps to make sure they are clean? Bleach? Milton? Pub line cleaner? ....it came with a porta potti toilet, a rolling water butt, and a black waste container none of which i know when were last used, but all look externally clean and new....id like to clean them and make sure theyre germ free.... So any tips appreciated :)

We all started out as rookies and this is a great forum to find out information on anything, so the only daft question is the one you don't bother to ask, coz you never find out the answer and nobody else will either.

We use Puriclean for rolling fresh water butt (whatever make, & think Milton would do fine), plus all pipework at start of the season at very least. Not bleach as it's too strong and can rot things. You can buy stuff to clean the black/grey water containers but personally I don't bother.

I use Milton but it needs to be flushed out well as it is corrosive if residue is left in contact with metal parts.

Puriclean every time in the aquaroll for me,I use it before every trip,as for the wastemaster,I just flush it out with fresh water after emptying.

If Milton / Johnsons Sterilising fluid is safe for BABIES BOTTLES ETC its safe for you.
As for corrosive on metals the only metal it is likely to come in contact with is a s/s sink or plug hole as you will be using the tap to rinse things it will be washed away.
YOU would need to store it in a tin can for about 12 months for it to leak due to a galvanic action on the tin coating ETC.
Virtually every component in a caravan to do with drinking water,waste water is made of plastic in its many types and grades to keep the weight down.
I have used baby bottle sterilising fluid for neih on 20 years and I still living at 75 next month
Just use your loaf pour in 1/4 to 1/2 bottle of Milton or same into fresh water barrel fill with hot water roll about to mix leave for 20 mins, pump through taps etc to run into waste water followed by a good slug of washing up liquid via kitchen sink. when drained give waste container a good shake and empty.
Refill F/water and pump through all taps etc and allow to drain into waste tank and empty

Possible damage to water heater and apparently any water filters fitted using Milton.
We use Puriclean and have done for years,it can leave a taste to the water in not thoroughly flushed out
I would imagine lime build from hard water areas would cause more damage

We find puriclean to be the best. It visibly removes any algae growth that forms over the winter lay over period. Always leave the solution over night then we rinse through thoroughly.

Awesome advice ont he water system..... Any specific tips for cleaning top and bottom tank of a porta loo? Never used one, and its second hand which the gf had a bit of a moan about but as it looks brand new shes happy with me giving it a thorough clean....I have no idea how long its been stood is all, it is empty though, and externally everything is ship shape..... Milton again? Blue toilet fluid?

Hi - Please please do not use Milton for cleaning the fresh water that you drink in your caravan. Yes it is great for Babies bottles etc. if you agitate and use bottle brushes - but this cannot be done in a pipe or butt. It is also corrosive and can damage the water heater. But most of all it does not get rid of Bio film - This is a slimy film that can build up in your Butt or pipes this makes bacteria feed and thrive on this film in all weathers. It is the bacteria that can make you ill - very ill. Puriclean is the product to use it cleans and sterilises. I believe the forces use it. I understand that there is another product from Carver or whoever took them over. So please heed my advice and take no notice of what you hear. as for the portaloo and waste but I dont know.
