Ive been so lucky today. My fresh water and grey water butt was dry, so no film in it, soaking everything over night in sterilizing tablets from home bargains, and will do the pipes etc before we plan on going somewhere, before we set off.........and the porta potti was full of pink fluid, and had fresh blue fluid in, almost like the previous owner, had planned to go somewhere and didnt, spotlessly clean, so just soaking both tanks of that in a weak sterilizing fluid too just for peace of mind..
Thanks everyone.

From what i understand dave, as i did a lot of reading around it, sterilizing tablets are similar to chlorine tablets and only vary in strength and sodium content. I cant really comment on the effectiveness of Milton, as everything i needed to do was already clean and dry.... apart from saying im extremely happy that everything i have is clean and now germ free, the fresh water tank is sparkling, waste tank doesnt have any smell to it neither does the black tank, and all the black gunk in the toilet flush tank has gone completely.... so yeah, milton definately sterilizes.

I dont think that you understand me, I did a great deal of research on this clean water a couple of years ago unfortunately I have deleted it now I know the answers and boy was we ill once. If you want to continue to put things in your mouth and after your stomach then please go ahead but you asked for advice and my advice based on fact is DO NOT USE MILTON TO CLEAN AND STERILISE YOUR CLEAN WATER SYSTEM. As it does not get rid of Bio Film as this is what bacteria feed on and it will make you ill in varying degrees. Just because your Butt appears clean and dry as soon as clean water goes into it, the Bio film (slimey residue) re activates and starts again where it left off.

we use sterilizing tablets but im not sure what make they are as the missus uses them in herjob filling and cleaning vending machines. So if drinks machines are ok with these im sure our caravan is.I will have a look what they are. Most of these chemicals for caravans are normal household stuff put in a posh bottle with a snazzy name so they can charge 4 times more for it

too early to be doing this unless you are sure your pipes are drained properly, still a risk of ice and low temps

Chalkie, thanks for the advice..... I understood completely what you said, and after inspecting the cleanliness of my water container i did a bit of research on chlorine and bleach based sterilization.
"Bacteria within biofilms are up to 1,000 times more resistant to antimicrobials than are the same bacteria in suspension. Although new decontamination methods are being investigated for removing biofilms, chlorine and monochloramines can effectively inactivate biofilm bacteria."
After reading this, and finding out sterilization tablets and Milton was chlorine based ( It contains 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and 16.5% sodium chloride (NaCl; common salt). 1:80 dilution is used to sterilise babies' feeding utensils) I decided it was ideal for what i wanted it for....
I have yet to run any sterilizing fluid through my vans pipes, and i may buy some of the proper stuff thats recommended to do that, when the time comes.

Thanks again!
