Hi all

My wife and I have some fantastic friends. I posted over a month ago after being given a free caravan, after closer inspection rot had taken hold and with half an hour of pulling and chipping we found the whole rear end to be a write off :(

Anyway... Another friend of ours inherited a newer model and found theirs to be surplus so we now have another FREE van :) the condition is near mint with no damp issues whatsoever. It's a 1991 Avondale Leda with all the bells and whistles.

It has been stored at a local farm where our friends would stay often and keep things in good order, the issue we currently have is the outside is quite mossy and under the edge of the windows mould has started to form.

I am wanting to give it a darn good scrub but don't know what to use. I have seen excellent results from the guys at the '£5 hand wash' places where they squirt a foam over the car and leave it to react for a short time then jet wash it off. Anyone know what it is and if it's readily available? Or do I just go for a bog standard halfords (or the like) soap in a bucket and get on with it?

I have access to a decent jet washer and I have also purchased a telescopic brush that will allow water to travel through it,

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Traffic film remover will shift a lot of the grot, but is usually caustic so take sensible precautions.

Do NOT, however, use your pressure washer on the van, as if it hasn`t got leaks now, it probably will have after you`ve blasted it. Sealant hardens over time and the pressure washer will remove any that has is past it.

Bucket and soft, long handled brush will do the job, eventually.

Thanks for the advice. Where can I get my hands on some of that traffic film remover? I have some fenwicks caravan cleaner (recommended by a mate) but I don't think it will attack the moss effectively. I have heard it is good at cleaning and preserving the body but not so good on getting rid of marks and built up stuff

G S F are the best for TFR I bought 25lts for £18 plus vat or I did use demon machine from Asda or halfords was as good

Aldi caravan cleaner is really good , and cheap , and will be on sale soon. Try Stardrops from any supermarket, wilko or pound shop.

Don't bother with Fenwicks very disappointed with it hot soapy water would have achieved the same result you can spend a fortune on products that have CARAVAN in title I learnt me lesson with a speedboat buying items well over priced but not cleaning any better than a bit of fairy liquid don't even get me started on so called built in polish and water repellent

What you already have is fine.

The Fenwicks you have and the telescopic brush is the first thing to try. No point on going out and buying more stuff until you have tried what you have.

For bad marks use a sponge and the Fenwicks neat.

As others have said, do NOT use a pressure washer.

Our van, a 1997 4 berth had stood outside on a storage yard for 6 years. The sides were green and the roof was black.
Fenwicks caravan cleaner and a telescopic brush brought it up a treat.
Being an old van, it will never be all bright and shiny like a new van, but it is clean and that is good enough for us. We ain't out to win prizes, just enjoy ourselves!

I find that my wife's washing machine powder in a bucket of hot water does the trick. Use a stiffish brush, like a dish washing / pot washing brush along side strips and front and rear lights to get out green gunge. Go easy around awning rails and other areas where old mastic might be disturbed.
I recently removed my awning and window hanging aluminium rails and resealed them with mastic roll tape. Much easier than I imagined and peace of mind for a decade I hope.

Fairy Liquid will clean but dull the paintwork, I would agree if Fenwicks Caravan cleaner is used as directed it does a very good job and you already have it.

as already said you already have the best stuff, Fenwicks a brush and elbow grease, I wouldn't bother with anything else Fenwicks will bring it all off, once clean give it a good polish, don't use the brush on the windows just use a cotton cloth dipped in you wash mixture.

Don't use the jet wash - unless you have a brush fitting which lets the water flow at LOW Pressure. My Kárcher has this fitting and I used it on my moss covered C-o-C with no ill effects (to the van . )
