Hi folks.
Just wondering what everyone's opinions/ experiences are with trying to get freeview when in the caravan. ?? We haven't been out in it yet...don't watch much TV but just thought it would be a bonus to have if weather rubbish or for a movie at night.
The caravan we have bought ( swift challenger 520SE 2002yr) has a status ariel built in if that's any good to you?
Advice appreciated :-) cheers

Depends on the location of the site and strength from the transmitter.

A friend lives so close to a transmitter than an antenna plug and 3" of cable gets them a reliable signal. No mast antenna needed.

Depends on location definitely...

We've got freeview, but have resorted to Freesat with a dish as in some places we've been the signal has been unreliable, but with a dish it isn't.

I have never not got freeview picture and have being in some dodgy pitches

poobob69, Freeview should not be a problem, probably will have to retune when moving to different areas. Remember to switch on the amp for the aerial.

If you've got the disc type aerial you have to get a really strong signal to even get the tv to work, you need a directional aerial,they are far better and should get freeview nearly every time.

never had a problem getting freeview anywhere

I use freesat also.
Have had problems with freeview in parts of North Devon and also Dorset.

Depends of what type of status aerial your have.
The newer ones can be tilted for either vertical or horizontal polaristion.

I beleive all main transmitters are horizontal polarisation and relay transmitters are vertical polarisation.

Just have a look at the aerials on local houses to see if they are mounted vertical or horizontal.

a directional aerial will help a lot with less than perfect signals..

First of all you need to go away somewhere and try it out. If you have freeview on your tv, you will need to retune the tv when you get where you're going. It will need retuning every time you set it up in a different location. Then see what happens. Status aerials are sometimes brilliant, and sometimes rubbish, so check it out first before you go buying all manner of gizmos... it might just work without all that! If you have a DVD player built in, then take a few films with you as a back up. It's possible to check whether the area you're going to has a high signal or not.

That used to be the case when the signal was analogue, however, since the analogue signal was turned off I gave never failed to get an adequate signal with my flying saucer and my directional aerial stays in the front locker all the time.

If for some reason it gives you a less than perfect signal then it will at least give you a TV tuned into the best signal and you can then align the directional aerial using the tv's signal strength monitor to point the directional aerial the right way.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

2002 Status is probably an analogue aerial so wont work.

An aerial is an aerial. No such thing as analogue or digital, they are all the same thing.. Which is why the aerial which has been on my roof for 20 years works perfectly with freeview.

Totally agree. Same here. Just the occasional area I can't get a signal. Remember to re- tune wherever you go and like someone above said try it before you buy any extras.

Make sure you Ariel is as high as you can get it. And that your series plugs into the set or caravan socket, are not dodgy. . .
