Aside from the need to avoid scams (which are easily Googled) I was wondering how one actually goes about buying a caravan that seems to be legit.

I've never even bought a car from Ebay so I'm not sure how it works.

Auctions: Do people bid sight unseen? Or is it considered standard to want to come and view it before going home and bidding. If you win the auction do you pay and then collect or pay in cash when you go to collect? If then when you go to collect it something is wrong, are you allowed to pull out or are you bound by eBay rules to complete the sale?

Buy It Now: That means you pay right away, right? No recourse to pull out?

I know not to believe any scams about "The caravan is in Orkney Isles but I will deliver if you put money into fictitious EBay escrow." I'm just wondering about what appears to be a genuine private seller within 100 miles of where I live.... how are these sales expected to progress?

I bought my Knaus off Ebay.
I called the guy and made a judgement about him and the caravan there and then.
We travelled 300 miles to see it and were taken with it immediatly and I asked what he was looking for by way of price that was just over the starting price so we paid him a deposit.
He arranged a quote for delivery that was very reasonable, we arranged payment and that was that.
I guess if the seller wanted to continue the auction you would have to be willing to go see it and then bid.
The guy we bought from was in business and could accept a card payment so we had protection anyway.
If it was a cash on collection deal and you bid and won and it was not exactly as described you could walk away with your money and let him complain.

We bought our first two from E-bay. The first hadn't reached its reserve so hadn't sold when we went to view it. We were happy with the deal at the reserve so arranged to buy and collect later and left a deposit for the van. The second van was an auction with a buy it now, again we went to view it first to make sure everything was as the advert stated. We bought the van through E-bay, leaving a deposit. The remainder was paid by bank transfer.

Obviously you do not pay without seeing caravan & being able to tow it away, so ideal transaction is that you inspect, pay & tow away. The legal aspect is unclear if you buy sight unseen or 'buy it now'. Most would say that if caravan is not as described on the listing when you arrive then keep your money in your pocket & leave. In theory you could be pursued through the courts but in fact its unlikely to happen & action may well not succeed anyway.

What does need to happen is that you communicate well with seller during auction, ideally speak on the phone & get an assurance from him that caravan is as described. If he is honest then he will be happy for you to be happy with caravan before you pay. Conversely don't take the p**s & try to knock price down when you arrive. Decide your max price before you bid then you should not have a wasted trip when you collect. Ideal collection point is seller's home address, avoid meetings on motorway services etc.

Next is dependant on value of caravan, up to £2k or so caravan will be old & if you buy from seller's home address then should be legit. If it is Cris reg then do a check but if present owner has not reg'ed it with Cris then a can of worms could be opened up with caravan having been nicked several owners ago. So on old 'van use judgement & don't bother with Cris.

On much newer caravan, several £k upward then more care needs to be taken about proving title. Current owner should have reg'ed it with Cris, if not don't even bother to bid, same rules apply, no money until you have seen caravan but it might be safer to pay by bank transfer but obviously seller will need proof of payment before you take caravan.

Obviously the usual scams are easy to suss because they always require payment before seeing caravan but bear in mind people have been robbed of large sums of cash by turning up for what they thought was a legit ebay sale so when arriving with cash take a bit of care.

"buy it now" would be subject to the van being as described otherwise you could pull out when you see it.

Personally I would not buy before seeing any car or caravan on ebay. I would always view and try to conclude a deal during the viewing.

So if it's "Buy It Now" and nearby, it may be worth having a look before pressing that button, but beware of feeling rushed to be the one to buy it?

And if I bid then so long as there is enough time on the auction, I should go have a look. And if something has egregiously changed between when I went and looked and when I go to collect it, then what recourse do I have?

Obviously, I will go have a look. I just wasn't sure what was expected.

With 'buy it now' you risk losing it if you go & look without clicking. Buy it now is only worth it for something that looks like a bargain, so click & then go & look, if its as described then its what you want. As pointed out before if caravan is not what you have been led to believe it is when you arrive then simply keep your cash in your pocket & leave. Sellers cannot leave neg feedback, only buyers.

The best time to put in your one & only bid on an auction is literally 15secs before auction ends, to leave other bidders no time to top it. Hold your nerve & click at 15secs point. Whack in the top price you are willing to pay & if nobody wants to pay more then its yours. If somebody has bid more & your best price was not enough then obviously you were not prepared to pay that price so nothing is lost.

So you are saying that it is OK to click "buy it now" and not actually hand over the cash if it is not as described?

Its always ok to walk away to either buy it now or bid at auction if item is not as described, ie not as good or as complete with equipment as seller has described. Regular sellers will argue until they are blue in the face that an auction is legally binding & you are legally committed to buy once you bid or buy it now but it is rubbish because 'as described' is always arguable.

This is not about ducking & diving & trying to beat seller down on agreed price when you arrive, or simply changing your mind. This is about deciding you are willing to pay x amount for a specific item. If the item is as you were lead to believe by seller then you pay the agreed price. If it turns out it is not then don't pay.

I would never show up and dicker a lower price, even if there were a problem not described. I would approach it with the attitude of "I will buy this if it is as you described." My walking away may inspire them to take less money from a future buyer, but I would consider myself out of the picture as a potential buyer.

Yes, there are endless arguments about buying from ebay but it comes down to deciding how much you are prepared to pay for an item based on how that item is described, if during the auction that price goes above what you are prepared to pay then you are out. If at the end of auction item is still below your top price then bid your top price 15secs before end to give you best chance of buying item.

A good buyer will pay the agreed price provided he interacts with a good seller. Sellers can help themselves by carefully wording their listings. It may be a bad idea to describe a 20yr old caravan as 'bone dry', maybe better is 'its dry as far as I can ascertain'? & tyres years old but hardly worn should not be described as 'new tyres', etc et al.

I hav ebought my last 2 caravans via ebay, the first was only 2 miles away if that, and from the time of sending the message to them asking loads of questions to being sat in the caravan was all of 25 mins! the caravan got fully checked over complete with taking a damp meter with me, and seeing everything fully working such as electrics and water and gas, a price was agreed on, while I was there they removed the caravan off ebay by cancelling the sale, you don't have any comeback with cars or caravans with ebay anyway, they simply don't want to know. the second one involved a trip of 60 miles with a fully loaded car, we had something already planned for the weekend, and of course a fully loaded envelope of cash, again the caravan got fully checked including ther cris documents, and while the blokes sorted all that out us ladies loaded the caravan with our gear and off we went. never looked back and never had any problems with either

We bought ours from eBay
It was listed as a classified ad so just like a private sale on gumtree or preloved. You get in touch with the seller then view it, make an offer and it's yours.
I have bought folding campers off eBay through the bidding process and never had any trouble.

I would never even consider buying a van off ebay unless I had gone and had a good look at it first. We looked at several before we eventually bought the one we have now. Some went way above what we were prepared to pay, so we didn't bid, some we looked at we didn't like for various reasons, then along came the one we bought. It was a "best offer", so we went to have a look taking just enough money for what we wanted to pay, made an offer which was accepted, and towed it home.

We started looking at the end of the season, as this is the time to pick up a bargain. Set ourselves a budget and a maximum distance from home, and were prepared to wait until the right one came up. When we found one that "felt right", we bought. Simple!

Best Regards,
Colin

If not far to travel go look and if you like ask them if they will sell off of Ebay, agree a price and they just end the sale on Ebay, they will be saving on fees so could even reduce the price a tad.

Our first COC was only half hour away and we did just the above, genuine couple giving up caravanning due to health, the second and present caravan was again Ebay, it had fnished on Ebay without a buyer, we viewed it the next day, agreed a price (lower than their starting Ebay price) and towed it away same morning.

August seems to be a good month for we bought and sold this month without any problems, always view the van you will get a feel for the sellers aswell as checking the van over for damp etc before laying out any money.

Good luck, just use your common sense and you won't go wrong.

I have read on here several times now that the end of the season is when most vans are sold so I'm trying to be hopeful that in 18 months or so (that is, at the end of our second season) there should be a fair amount of choice.
