If you are paying more than a couple of grand then previous owner needs to have updated Cris reg which is the voluntary registration scheme we have for caravans in UK & is better than nothing, possibly. Cris. In your own interest you need to pay £14.95 for check. If owner has not updated details & you pay for a check do this before buying caravan as it may come up as previously stolen even if owner bought in good faith then thats his problem not yours. Cris reg number etched into windows.

If you are considering grey import European built caravan even late model then this may not be registered with with Cris but may be quite legit, ask for sales receipt & so on. Your choice if you buy.

If you are buying an older 'van, but newer than '92 then Cris is less likely to have been updated so your choice, plenty of s/h buyers will not even have heard of Cris. Less than £2k probably not worth bothering with check, just use your sense, but don't check after paying obviously. Caravans built before '92 will mostly not be registered.

and don't forget to get a samp meter and check inch of the caravan

also to see that everything is working, water plugged in elecs plugged in and everthing switched on

check the age of the tyres too, if older than 5 years then they need changing regardless of condition

Just as important. Buy a damp meter and thoroughly check panels for water ingress, especially behind awning rail areas. Corners and around windows. Look out for spongy delaminated floor and check important electricals like fridge and water heater. Bring your own cable adaptor if viewing where there is mains electric.
Take plenty time viewing and use all senses like touch and smell as well as eyes.

SNAP some of above, posted a minute apart.

When you think you have found the right van, get a mobile engineer to damp check it, usually costs about £40.00. This takes the risk out of it and if the engineer is happy with his findings then buy it. That's what I did and saved a fortune over a dealer price. I wouldn't worry too much about the little things like hot water etc, you can fix these sort of thing and remember you will be buying much cheaper than a dealer so you can budget a bit to get it serviced and any niggles repaired when you get it home. I spent £40 on damp check, £150 on full service, £150 on 3 new tyres. Saved about £1400 on van compared to dealer.
