hi I put a tow safe report of I got from kia .people were really helpful caravan dealer said it should be fine yes they would I know . So eventually I spoke to towsafe .They said it was fine so I explained the extreme caution not suitable I had on my report. He said it was guidance only but there were probably better matches but as long as it is within 5 to 7% then its acceptable lower than 5 its not. Its working out 5.1 on ours so he said it flags up at under 7 % .What he said was they are changing the way they write the reports as it is overly worrying too many people . How they wok out is your vans mtplm then x it by 7% that's what your towball will be. Although he said moving stuff about will change it and the other factors were how much weight you put in the van . Here is a copy of he new report and how towsafe are doing them now VIN Plate / MTPLM 83.1%
This calculation is based on the gross train weight (the maximum
permitted combined weight of the car and the caravan). If this match is
above 100% you are breaking the law!
Kerb / MTPLM 85%
The industry recommends this figure is not above 85% for beginners;
however this is not a legal requirement. A match over 100% may
invalidate your insurance
Max Tow / MTPLM 83.1%
Do not take Max Tow literally as it is a only a test of traction on a 1:8 hill
start , and not the overall the ability of the car to tow at normal road
speeds. If this figure is over 100% you could be in breach of your car's
warranty and may be breaking the law!
Achievable Noseweight 5%
Target noseweight of 7% (or above) NOT achievable, however a
noseweight of 5% is possible. The result is the percentage of the gross
caravan weight permitted on the vehicle's tow ball. The most stable
towing combinations require 7% (or above) of the caravan's weight on
the tow ball, less than 5% is deemed undesirable. Always check the
noseweight of your caravan before purchase and when loading.

Everything in that report makes perfect sense to anybody who can understand it.
So lets break it down to about a couple of lines. Tow the caravan with the noseweight set at the 75kg limit for your car. If it does not feel safe & stable then your car is not suitable.

Yes we understand now billy it was thw old report that was worrying me not hubby caravan club has said its ok too. Need to move items around to alter noseweight. 2ltr car with a kerbweight should be fine then
I can tell the difference with my van when the noseweight is light. It wiggles as you tow it. Not a snake or anything like that. But it does wiggle more and its affected more by crosswinds and larger vehicles.
Under 70kg its noticeable sometimes, Ove 70kg its much better no wiggle at all. I try to get it very close to my cars max at 75kg.
My vans only 1150kg (max laden) though. With a heavier van and more weight at the back it maybe worse.
The 7% figure so often quoted seems to have been plucked out of the air and is very much a generalisation. My Bailey caravan has a MTPLM of 1229kg and a noseweight of 58kg. This gives a figure of 4.7% which according to the screed above is deemed undesirable.
Which would you trust? The 7% figure plucked out of the ether and a generalisation, or the specific noseweight for the designated caravan.
The caravan tows perfectly at 58kg noseweight.
What do Swift suggest to be the correct noseweight? If that is too heavy for the car then it is unsuitable.
