Ok so last week we ordered a Lunar Quasar 462 - 2 Berth.

We haven't caravanned for 8 years and fell in love with Quasar. Anyway we went back today for a 2nd look and to buy some bits and pieces and saw a Sprite Major 4SB.

Now when we first went to the dealer it had been purely with a view to buying the above Sprite, but they didn't have one in stock. The reason for wanting one was we have 2 labradors and felt that the space and fixed bed layout would be quite handy as probably one of them would get on the bed during the day.

Anyway today we saw one with the upgraded upholstery Sun Roof and Diamond Pack. We really did like the layout, although I felt the shower compartment was a little bit too small.

The bigger van does appeal especially as it's a mere £355 more for the extra space and berths. However that also begs the question, why are they cheap?

To cut a long story short we haven't changed our order because we do really like the Lunar interior.

Are we doing the right thing, is the Lunar a better product as we perceive it to be?

I had a quick look in a new 2 berth Lunar recently, not sure of the model but it looked like a narrow body and was approx 4 metres long, available with a side kitchen and also a rear kitchen. I was really impressed at how well it was finished inside and if I was in the market for a new 2 berth and had the cash to buy one it would certainly be on my list. I think they have got the combination of being comfortable and nice without being over the top with luxuries.

Why do you think they are cheap, cheap compared to what? No UK built mass produced caravan has better basic build quality than any other other. You pay the extra for better fabric & fittings.

Cheap as in the Sprite being only £355 more than the Lunar. It's quite significantly bigger than the Lunar for what is not an awful lot more money.

Thats marketing for you. If the 'entry level'(whatever that means)caravans were not 'cheap' then nobody would pay extra for the 'luxury' models. It has always been the case that the profit margins are higher with the high end models because price perception allows manufacturers to add a much larger price premium than the actual extra cost of manufacture which is just the extra cost of better fabric/veneer/equipment.

The basic caravan construction stays the same. Across the range the high end models will last no longer than the cheaper models just because they are more expensive.

I have no idea whether Lunar has better construction methods/quality control than Swift group. From posts on here over the yrs, UK built 'vans all seem to have a pretty equal share of faults.
