I am having two new tyres (175 x 13) fitted to my steel rimmed caravan wheels because one of them is starting to crack plus they are both over 4 years old anyway but having visited 5 different local tyre fitting companies, none of them stock any well known brands named trailer tyres which I find rather odd. The names I am referring to are Dunlop, Michelin, Avon, Firestone, Good Year, Pirelli, Uniroyal and Continental etc. but apparently because this specific type of tyre is constructed differently only budget named tyres are available such as Nankank, Marshal and Hankook. However, I have been informed that Nankook tyres are the best brand to buy (which I have ordered) but just interested to know if the above is correct, and if so why such well known brands do not manufacture trailer tyres.

They probably do but not in all sorts of sizes. Of those you were offered I would have taken the Hankooks. Not had them on a caravan but until very recently they would have been my choice over all the others ( premium makes included ) for fitting to my car. I recently fitted on recommendation Apollo Aspire tyres to my Mondeo and they are better again, made by the same company that make Vredestein they are nothing short of superb.

Do not write off the cheaper makes for van tyres, they produce what is normal for supply to the industrial user, and are excellent for the job. My caravan has a pair of Maxis fitted which are as good as any I have had on the caravan including the new original fitted tyres.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Trev they do make "Trailer" tires but under the name of "Van"tires.If you asked for "Van"tires under the said makes im sure you would have got a set.

I did ask if caravan tyres were actually commercial van tyres Jeff to which the fitter said no, they are different and have to go on special order specifically for caravan tyres.

Replaced ours with Hankooks, these were manufacturer supplied from new and that's what's going on it, never had a problem with them at all.
Remember your van does a lot less miles than your car does so I have no problem fitting tyres from Korea.

A few years ago foreign tyres from Japan, Korea and Yogoslavia had a bad reputation for poor grip especially on wet road surfaces but having some good feedback on the Hankook tyres now it makes me feel a bit more confident in having them fitted. After all, there are only two tyres on a caravan so the grip is somewhat as important as the towcar.
The tyres being removed are Avon made in the UK but for some reason they no longer make this size.

175x13 is a size that has probably not been used on vans since the 70s & new caravans have not used the size this century I think, so choice will be limited. The premium brands will no longer make them because their main market is new vehicles not aftermarket. Hankook is a good brand though, they are fitted to new Kia & Hyundai.

He is talking through his nether parts. A tyre with the requisit load rating is the same as any other tyre of the same rating. If tyre manufacturers had to produce specific tyres for caravans they would not do it there would be insufficient demand to make production economic.

My caravan is a 1999 model but the tyre size is correct as stated in the Coachman handbook. That's why I can't understand why I was able to get Avon caravan tyres back in 2010 when they were last fitted but not now.
Anyway, I have been quoted £60 each for the Hankooks which includes balancing and fitting which is a good price so I am taking my caravan to the tyre fitting bay and let them do the job.

Will they balance them without you asking i wonder?

I had to insist. I went to ATS before and had to insist they balance them, But they had all sorts of van tyres in stock, It was a larger style unit where we took the lorroes to have their tyres done also, So that maybe why.

More commercial vehicles than the average tyre bays.

Grampian91: It's the same tyre fitting bay as I took the caravan to previously over 4 years ago which is Mr. Tyre. I watched them balance both wheels last time so will do the same again.
I found ATS were just as expensive as Kwik-Fit which they wanted another £38 for the same Hankook tyres.

my 1995 avondale mayfly has them on billy 175 x 13 C..

they are commercial van tyres.. rated at 90 mph.. 50% more weight than my van puts on them and at 50% more pressure..

all in all they have a very easy life..

i dont think they are used now.. most van tyres are 14 inch.. your time scale is a bit off.. he he

mind you "this century" dosnt go far back now does it.. the size is still commonly available though..
