Hi all, hubby and me both in our 70s now, I'm 5ft and hes 5ft 6in so we struggle with threading our awning along the top of the channel - he has to perch on the caravan steps to get the height! Does anyone know of a device to aid this or any other advice to make it easier would be welcome.
Have you tried cleaning it out and once you have done that get some silicon spray and give it a spray (Don't breath the spray) and you should find it runs a lot easier, it's still best done with two people though one feeding and the other pulling. I've always had to stand on the caravan steps it shouldn't think many don't.

I don't think the OP is referring to struggling getting the awning cord into the channel actually, I think they are referring more to their height and what other short people do to reach the awning rail other than using the steps.
I have seen shorter people using one of these platforms which can easily fold away.
Google for Aluminium Folding Steps. We have a set that make life easier for SWMBO and they are stored behind the door, taking up minimum space. They also have a bar at the front where you can support yourself using your knees.

I wonder if this could be attached to one end of the awning bead and drawn into the channel when the awning is removed. If left in place it could be used to draw the awning through.
Not sure how to attach to the awning bead but a simple knot may do it. Perhaps a tape could be sewn to the bead with a small ring. A stopper knot in the end of the line. Loop the line end through the ring, pass the stopper knot through the loop and pull tight would be simple.
I have one of these that I use when putting up the awning on my own Pick up tool
Works better pushing as opposed to pulling as the jaws can pull off the canvas

We attached a strong cord (small hole in fabric near end) once the bead is in the channel it is fairly easy to pull through, regardless of height. You still want some one helping the bead in as one pulls it through.
We used this method on the MH as it is a lot taller than a caravan!
