If your trying to find a wiring fault on the caravan running light circuits, it can be very helpful to have a PP9 battery and one of those connectors that fits it from an old radio or whatever or from Maplins.
Find the relevant pins on the 12N socket and with a couple of paper clips connect the battery across them.
For example pin 3 is the earth and 5 or 7 are the side light circuits.
It's so much more convenient than hooking the car up and with only a 9 volt supply its easier and safer too.
Used this checking the connections for my rear-view camera yesterday.
