I am looking at buying a caravan but before I do I am having a garage built to house it. Can anyone tell me how high caravans are. Every advent I see never states the height

Depends on the make, model and age of the van!
Mine is old with an overall height 235cm.
Remember you need the overall maximum height, not the awning rail height!
thank you everyone, it is as i thought a bit of a lottery. None of the adverts say the external height so I think that I will build the garage internal height to 2400mm (8 feet) and hope for the best.

I doubt you will get any van in at 2400mm. You say that manufacturers don't publish the external height - Bailey do for every van they make, in the brochure and on website. As previously said I would go for 3000mm minimum

Why not pop along to your nearest caravan dealer and ask.
Once you are stood next to a caravan you will soon realise that 2.4 metres (8 feet) won't be enough.
do you mean a barn? or are you looking at a pop top caravan like an Eriba?
my ranger is apparently 2.6m tall including the status aerial but i am 1.93m tall and can stand inside it no problem. the aerial is aver 200mm tall and the wheel radius must be 250mm and the centre of the hub is below the floor. so it must be at least.
i guess the internal height of the garage would not be a problem but the door is going to be tall.
