HI, I'm looking to buy a used caravan, ideally around the £3000 mark. I've been checking out dealer prices and the price for a 1998 4 berth is around 2-3K but then if you look at a 2003 4 berth the prices jump to 5-7k. Why the sudden jump in a few years ? Most dealers do not stock pre 2000 caravans, is there something i should know, is pre 2000 a bit like over 100k miles on a car ?
Also, given the price range, can anyone recommend a dealer that will provide say a 3 month warranty at that price ? Ebay prices at the moment are not that better than some dealers so a warranty at least for damp is worth a maybe £500 more ?
The most important factor to look for is damp in vans of this age. I wouldn't be too concerned when it was made, more that it is dry and the interior has been looked after well.

No dealer will give a proper guarantee on a '98 caravan, they are not going to be doing major damp repairs under warranty on a caravan of that age & neither will they I doubt on a 2003 with is still old.
In your price range you are better buying privately from ebay or any other sales platform. Choose caravan near enough to check before buying & check carefully for damp yourself. It would also be handy if caravan has service history of dealer servicing & annual damp check.
If you buy privately I would budget for service & probably tyre change if tyres are over 5yrs old. That way you know its all good. Dealers selling older caravans are notorious for claiming it has been serviced & so on when it has just had a quick check, they will buy their stock cheaply off ebay, so cut out the middleman, I would..
Main dealers selling off their older trade ins usually sell them as seen, not serviced & with no comeback.
ok, so you think a 3 month warranty on a 1998 caravan is pointless ? I'm only really bothered about damp etc. I figure if a dealer knows its got damp he won't give a warranty and if he does give one, he must at least think its ok. I've bought a damp meter, but there are stories(on here) of people buying damp disasters even after check with a meter.
Problem with ebay is the prices are almost as high as a dealers prices, and having recently sold my car on ebay, I know its full of scam artists and idiots. I suppose its also full of genuine people too, if you can find them.
You can treat ebay as no different from a caravan for sale in your local paper. Stick will caravans within travelling distance & establish good phone communication with seller. Provided it is caravan seller has used himself & he is selling it from his own house you will be ok. Most expensive time of yr to buy now, bargains will all be in in Oct/Nov/Dec.
A 3mnth guarantee from a seller of old caravans is pretty worthless, if you do take it back with probs he might tinker with it & bodge something up but really he is not going to replace a failed fridge, is he? If you are buying a caravan of that age try to find a dry one but apart from that you need to regard it as an ongoing project, you are always going to be fiddling with it fixing odds & ends.
It is important it is safe to tow & to be sure of that you need to get it serviced or do it yourself & probably change tyres. That way you can tow it 200miles at motorway speeds with confidence.
ok, fair enough thanks for the replies. So any idea why there is a price jump from a 1998 caravan to a 2003 caravan of £1000 - £3000 (to be fair the insides look nicer on a 2003 than on a 1998 but its a big jump for new cupboard fronts)
The price jump is because one is 5yrs younger than the other. Dealer prices at this time of yr are nothing to go on. They will be pushing prices up as much as they can. If they can't shift them by Sept the prices will tumble as they will be more prepared to deal.
No dealer will give caravans away though, they would rather shift them on through the trade than drop forecourt prices too much & damage the retail trade.
I think you'll be fine as long as nothing major wrong. We had our 2002 caravan a couple of months ago. There were a few minor things that needed sorting out, but on the whole in good condition. We had a 3 month warranty on it. The dealer put new tyres on and replaced one of the skylights. I have been resealing just for peace of mind. We have also fitted a new Alko stabiliser. Ive just T cut the windows, as were a bit hazed, and they've come up lovely!
Our daughter has a 1998 caravan, also in good condition.
Both of the caravans had a gas check, which i think is essential.
Get the best deal you can and enjoy. We certainly are!
------------- Enjoy life while you can, none of us know what's round the corner!
from my own experience ,and i must add i did NOT follow my own advice, find a van local to you that you like and get a local mobile caravan man to give it a check over for you ,shouldn't cost too much to do that and you'll have peace of mind.Good luck with your search and let us know how you gat on e
once a van gets beyond a certain age they tend to sell on condition more than a book price..
1000 for a 98 van isnt correct.. for a good one you will can pay a lot more.. you are also better paying a bit more for a good older van than a not so good younger one..
the snag is knowing what is a good one and what isnt.. :)
Buying private from either Ebay or Gumtree does not come without risk.
STILL CRS CHECK.
Two weeks ago I purchased a caravan from a private sale that I was assured had all documentation. When i went to pick it up it had a huge folder of literature, manuals etc but no CRS document. The gentleman (no comment) was at work and didnt know anyting. I did hook up as after a phone call to husband was again told it would be sent on. Now here's the crux..... I've taken a day off work, made arrangements for storage etc and have a great van with what appears to be genuine people.
When home the wife went shopping and I was still concerned so found number and done a CRS check (£15) over the phone.......... resulted in not being lossed of stolen BUT lots of finance still owing. I'm now not a happy bunny and ring chap back up to tell him I'm bring it back (1 1/2 hr drive) and to make sure he had my money. He did try to make excuse but i was having none of it......
Now comes to last weekend.... another suitable van appears on Gumtree, and this time all checked out and is a cracking van which has hardly been used from a retiring couple and is un beleivable great condition. I viewed at 5pm Saturday and arranged for balance to be paid Sunday. (as i had cash from previous sale). Here's the point, bargains are bargains and sometimes you have to act before others get in , and would the seller hold it while you "get someone to inspect it ?" of is he gonna sell to first person with cash. When we picked it up next day he had over 40 phone calls between 6pm Sat and 11am Sunday.
Thats just buying privately, nothing to do with ebay or gumtree, all that could equally apply if you buy from an ad in local paper or a for sale sign in window of caravan.
It is not unusual for a seller to try to sell with finance still owing with the intention(one hopes)of paying it off from sale money. Provided seller admits this then the way around it is for buyer to write cheque to finance co for amount owning & do it that way. Potential buyers need to do Cris check first themselves at their own expense before even viewing caravan from number supplied by seller, otherwise forget it.
Welcome to the world of buying/selling high value items privately, the reason for abysaml trade in prices from dealers is that they are charging a high price for them having the headache not you.
after looking at dealers, we also looked at both eBay and gumtree, didn't feel comfortable. I asked freinds and family to put the word out instead. Thankfully due to info from this we found an older couple near by who were looking to sell, so we bought their van after inspection. Personally I'd take time to ask around first, far safer than buying online etc. hope this helps.
Look for any raised patches on wall sign of damp . In cupboards under seats and aaround windows . Press to see if soft . Also any mustty smell . Or if they have an air freshners in . You can get a moisture meter off ebay for a few pounds well worth it if going sround dealers . Hope this helps . Damp is expensive to put right so take your time good luck x
We bought our Compass Kensington 2000 privately. Decent vans, well cared for by their owners and sold by honest people at a fair price are out there. We saw several vans before responding to the previous owners advert in February. It just takes a little research and lots of viewings to get a feel for what is out there and you will come across the right van.
Thanks for all the replies. Had the towbar fitted last week, and booked myself on a towing course in early July, still looking for that perfect van though... I'm in no rush and if prices come down in October I guess I can wait. I saw a cracking van on ebay, bloke was selling for his dead granny apparently.. Just seen same seller advertising caravan holidays on the cost.. so seems a bit dodgy to me. Its sold anyway now.
