Hi all,

Sorry about yesterday newbie question - She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are on our grand tour, and are rapidly learning some important lessons (like, don't leave the outside light on if you're not sure whether the charger is working. But I digress...)

Our first site in Ludlow was on grass and the wire pegs for the awning went in beautifully. Our second site in the Dales was on hard standing - hard-packed gravel - and there was quite literally no way I could get a wire peg into it. I didn't have a mallet in any event, but even if I had, there would have been no way to do it.

I presume, though, that there are pegs that are capable of doing this. What would be best for this use?

We use them johnks but we still struggle sometimes, i,v seen some with a hex head on them and a thred down the shaft, you screw them in with a cordless drill, iam going to have to get some.

We have those as well but they are useless on hard standing. Don't waste your money.
We go on grass most of the time if it isn't wet and use the screw in ones then.

Rock pegs and a big lump hammer. Sometimes needs a couple of goes to find the sweet spot.

We use these pegs, available from various other outlets, a bigger mallet also helps to drive them in, we always try to book hard standings and never had a problem with these.

I used to go on hard standings but now I use grass pitches. I brought screw in rock pegs and a drip but even with these it can be a royal pain in the neck, I found some sites the depth of the aggregate is way too deep. The size of stone also plays a factor, sometimes having to try three or four times to get one peg in!

So grass for us now plus it's better under the awning carpet. Each to their I suppose, but a lot of sites now only offer hard standing only which think is a shame.

I've tried various types and the above are the best - but get a 2lb lump hammer.
The ones you screw in with a drill are useless on hard standing.

I use the hex head screw in type,they're ok on some hard standings,hammer them in(mallet)screw them out,but as said above,different layers and composition of the hard standings makes it awkward,I've bent rock pegs on some pitches

We use metal screw pegs bought from Screwfix and the electric drill. Goes in easy. However we have a few large rock pegs as per the eBay link and a lump hammet as those camping rubber mallets are useless in our opinion on anything not grass.
