Which gas bottle is best, have always used butane gas but have noticed a lot of propane around and was wondering the benefits of changing and what the cost entails to change.

Butane doesn't perform very well below 5 degrees C, so Propane is best if you caravan when it's cold outside.

One of the things is propane is cheaper and has a lower freezing point than butane.
All you need to change is a propane regulator.

The benefit of propane is if you use in cold weather has a lower freezing point.A 7 kg butane bottle can be exchanged for a 6 kg propane bottle.

Just to add, if you have a fairly recent caravan with a bulkhead regulator then you only need to change the pigtail - this is the hose between the wall mounted regulator and the bottle.

We have been looking at the light weight one anyone got this one and do you think it is worth the initial expence to get new gas bottles. Btw we have an 1998 Gruau caravan.
We dont use in cold weather, mainly on the continent.

At the moment sueandadie I wouldnt bother with Calor lite, its the same gas just a lighter bottle, however, due to a recent recall getting refills for Calor lite are almost impossible, some dealers are getting a few niw but there are so many peopke want refills they go very quickly. I have swopped back to the non lite type bottle until Calors supply improves.

Get yourself a Safefill refillable cylinder, my 15ltr/8.6kg cylinder costs around £12.00'ish to fill at my local garage, propane(autogas), they now have 3 sizes to choose from. They are safe and stop filling at 80% full.

I can carry two of the large Gaslite bottles was BP propane and still weigh less than one old Calor bottle.
The Calor bottles rust on inside due to valves being left open when empty.
This then when mixed with oil carry over from refrigeration of propane to liquid to pump into the bottles gradually blocks the regulator.
The Gaslite bottles are made of glassfibre and I have been using them for over ten years and just swap them over when I change my van. There are fewer outlets at the moment than Calor but this will change now belonging to one of the Calor rivals,
I always partex my bottles at Do it All and always try to swop on a Wednesday and save 10%.
I use one large bottle approx. per year depends on weather but always have a spare.
The bottles take same type of valve and pigtail as Butane so long as the bore of the valve that fits on bottle is 27 mm
