Don't leave it on the van for any length of time.I take mine home and put it on an Optimate charger.
I put my battery in my van 8 years ago and it has not been out since, the battry charger goes on when we go away ( about once every 5 weeks or so ) stays on till we come home then nothing unless we have been at home a long time then every 3 montgs or so it gets a 24 hour charge. After the three months it still holds at 12.7v, and is still quite able to give me 4 or 5 days usage in the summer off hook up.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
the only thing that will really destroy a lead acid battery even a new one is letting it go dead flat and leaving it like that for some weeks.. it could only be a couple of weeks or it could be more..
once that happens the battery simply refuses to take a charge ever gain.. in simple terms its no longer a battery..
i have kicked the odd newish but dead one back to life by using a huge 100 amp plus jump start charger on them.. tis a bit risky though.. at first bugger all goes into the battery then it slowly start to go in and after a while the battery takes a normal charger..
anyways its leaving them dead flat that knackers them.. alarms and the like left on for long periods will do them in..
apart from that they do wear out with use but should last for some years..
Leisure batteries are different from Car batteries - Leisure ones can go flat without damage. I have just changed my battery - had the old one for about 8 years and always fitted to caravans. Never charged it other than on the caravan.
Oh ...I know ...some fool left the fridge light on !!! Another one bites the dust ...very expensive mistake to make twice !!!!
I am going to try and use the car to jump it ...as far as I can see it will either work or not ....

they can all go flat and be okay.. what destroys them is letting something take them dead flat with zero volts in them and then leaving them like that for a period of time..
car or leisure it makes no difference.. a lead acid battery must never be left for a longish period of time with zero volts in it.. a hard sulphate coating builds up on the plates and never comes off.. the result is one dead battery.. the time can vary but it will happen to them all if left dead flat for long enough..

Oh No!!! Take comfort from the fact that you're not the only one.... I also disconnect the battery totally when it's standing on the drive. Nothing can drain it if it isn't attached... But then, I'm not sure about modern caravans, I don't have an alarm or anything on my diddy little oldie caravan.

Ours is usually left on in between trips and up to now we would normally have had at least three, but we did not use the van from last October to this June due to wife having to fight for her job so the battery may not have survived. I keep my motorcycle on an Optimate at all times because that does not get the use it should and the van battery is on another one so I know it in good condition and ready to go as our storage is an hour away.

Over the winter this year my van went from early August through till late March sitting on the drive. I plugged it in for a day in October, plugged it in for Xmas ( the fridge is useful ) and then charged it before we went away. Had 5 days in it last week on the battery and on getting home ithere was enough charge to use the mover to push the van up my steeply sloping drive.
