Our 2006 Adria Altea 542uk Caravan doesn't have a battery fitted, we have had the van from new and now want to go on smaller sites with no electric hook up...so where do we start as in to get a battery and everything fitted...I've rung a few local Nottinghamshire caravan dealers and none seem to want to know...we've even thought about changing the van, but its layout is ideal for us and its all ours...any help or suggestions please, thanks for reading this

If at the moment it only has a 12v transformer then you need to get a transformer/charger fitted, the basic units are about £100. Its a simple job for a competent electrician, probably a couple or more hrs labour to do a proper job mounting everything correctly.

Caravan workshops will be busy this time of yr so not interested in this sort of non standard job, I guess but perfectly easily doable if you can get somebody to do it.

As Billy x says it should be fairly straightforward. Maybe it would be worth calling a couple of mobile caravan engineers? Maybe they would be more likely to take on a non-standard job than a big caravan dealer?

It would be a shame to have to change your van just for want of a battery! I have seen Adrias like yours for sale that have had the battery added, so it certainly can be done.

I was going to say the same, if you're not sure contact a local caravan engineer. They will advise you what to get and fit it for you on your drive.

I fitted a battery to my Hobby.
Two things to consider - 1) is to site the battery where it can vent. If no vented space available, cut a hole in the side of the van and cover with a grill on the outside. Very dangerous if you do not do this. Secondly, ensure the battery is secured - I fitted a couple of eyes either side and used a bungee cord. I actually fitted mine in the space below the wardrobe behind the Truma fire.

The electrics are easy if you know what you are doing. The charger is the really easy bit - connect the output to the battery and plug it in to the nearest socket. Make sure you get an intelligent charger. The connection from the battery to your 12v circuit depends on the consumer unit, and that is where some knowledge is required. So if you don't know yourself, the advice you already been given is good.

Just a ps here, you do know that you will have to run the fridge on gas (I hope it's a 3-way)... it won't run on 12v. Just thought I would mention this!

Hi we also have a an adria 542 uk 2007/08 model with a battery fitted. The transformer does not charge the battery, but all the lights and 12v 3 way fridge works off the battery, as does the fire etc. although no electric heating. Our battery is mainly used for the motor mover, and we always use EHU, as don't really rally or go ff grid so to speak. The van came with the the wires and connector for a battery, and we added the motor mover. Otherwise we just use as simple aldi/idl smart charger or solar panel. The battery is under the small first seat next to the wardrobe at the back of the van. i tend to recharge it in the awning, whilst away.

hope this helps
rgds
Chris
