Bit of a surprise was to receive ADAC's advice on how to construct a "rescue lane." Apparently Germany, Switzerland,Slovenia and the Czech Republic all subcribe to the Rescue Lane proceedure while it is actually built-in to Austrian traffic law. Apparently drivers should move to the extreem left and righthand lanes leaving the middle lane (ie. central road) for emergency vehicles. Makes sense where overhanging trees would be a problem for large rescue vehicles. Anyone experienced this proceedure which could be a bit confusing the first-time it is encountered?

Yes, I've come across it on a Welsh dual carriageway (A40 possibly) some years ago. Seemed to work OK once everybody had got the idea.

Op Stack has always used that system, as it allows access down the middle for lots of reasons, including the delivery of water supplies, as has been done this week by Kent 4x4 Response Group.

We get that on our local dual carriageways in Bristol. Cars just move tight in to the nearest side leaving a lane down the middle. It's all unofficial but works.
