It may be that the gas struts are shot. When they go it can be very difficult to push the roof up. We had that problem with our La Boheme folding caravan until I fitted new gas struts.

do you have to lift a specific end first like on the folding campers ie on a pennine Pullman you have to lift the rear bed out first then the front, I know on the goburs you have to lift the front end first and then the rear.

Thank you fior your replies. had come to that conclusion but wanted some reassurance before going any further. I thought I'd never be able to away on my own :( But now I have rung my local caravan hospital so hopefully this time next week I'll be getting her sorted. Can't wait!!

When i replaced mine i took one off and took it to SGS Engineering in Derby and had them match it. Much cheaper than a manufactured one from caravan dealer. Dont know your location but if you google gas struts you may find one close to you. Easy job to do if the struts are on the outside of your caravan but bit harder to do if on the inside as the roof needs to be up.

I think I'll just bite the bullet and let the caravan repair people do it as I think they are on the inside and I really wouldn't know what to do. I'm pretty good at DIY but rubbish with anything mechanical. I live in Cardiff so too far to go to Derby.

Well I bought it a little while ago but have only just tried to open it for one reason or another. Yes, it's 1987 /88. I bought it from someone near Nottingham so will be a different one. It's a 34ST model.

Yes I like the sound of getting replacements made but I can only get half the roof up at a time . I hadn't really noticed any struts, just a slidey thing like you'd have in a any lift up kind of box.. There must be some kind of hydraulics somewhere though?

Thanks, Zivadog, that's my last resort. I took it to a local storage place this week so that I could open it up and get set up for a holiday. I may have to rethink. The caravan hospital is just over the road from there so they said they'll take it and have a look. I'll wIt and see what their verdict is. Before buying this one, there was an Esterel of similar size and age for sale on eBay. As it was local I went to look at it and seller put it up on his no problem so thought this would be the same.
