So I'm a lorry driver and caravaner so probably most hated person on the road, but today traveling south on the M5 i spotted a lot of lunatics . Caravans being towed with no mirror extensions they have obviously changed the law on towing in the outside lane and increased the towing speed because I was doing 56 mph and some outfits passed me like I was standing still, not just vans little trailers that where bouncing around like they had been totally forgotten about !!! Glad I only went as far as Bristol ...
I was travelling along the M6 east towards Coventry on Thursday morning on the inside lane following a mid sized touring caravan being towed at exactly 70 mph. I didn't know what was towing the caravan till it left at one the motorway exits which turned out to be an older type white Ford transit van. On the way back travelling west I was in the middle lane doing 65 mph. when I was overtaken by a BMW towing a horse box trailer in the outside lane. The worst part was the fact that there was a horse in transit at the time.
However, a few weeks ago I was travelling along the M42 south at 70 mph. on the inside lane when I was overtaken by a red transit van towing a framed trailer with a large generator on board which must have been doing at least 80 mph.
I see it happening all the time with businesses and people towing for leisure.

I was heading home on the M5 on Wednesday and just about passed a new Range Rover hauling a twin axle at 75mph. I only caught him as something pulled out in front of him in the middle lane and he had to brake. It just isn't worth it.
Our problem is the large motor home people, often towing diddly cars. The scourge of the highlands used to be caravans but most are now amongst the most considerate of visiting drivers.

I use the M5 every day travelling to work and the speed I see some caravanners travelling is proper scary. I don't tow our caravan as oh does (v sensibly) but I always say something if his speed creeps up which it is easy to do with just a little lapse of concentration,. I know a lot of people are towing with more power than they need so it must be tempting to go faster but then you see those trailers rocking about. Also people pulling all sorts of trailers who think they are also exempt from speed limits. Ugh, it's just my pet hate.

Towing laws do not apply to the M5 it seems.
How many are not properly loaded and going at speed too. We went to North Devon last month and we were saying exactly the same. OH is an HGV driver as well, he says he sees bad driving all day long!!!!!!!
If you are towing with modern large diesel then speed will creep up to 75 without even noticing. No excuse of course but thats the reason. I am retired hgv 1 driver, I recall days before speed limiters, M4, M5, 75-80 in me Scania downhill, if you can do it, you will.
Absolutely Billy X, that's where I think any adult passenger should be helping the driver by also keeping an eye on the speedo. I don't tow but I do feel equally responsible, it is unfair to put all stress and work on person towing. I know it will sound like I am a proper back seat driver, but I see these passengers in cars where tow-er is going much too fast and they seem oblivious!
I like these threads. Never ceases to amaze me, I drive down the M5 doing 60 on cruise control and plenty of caravans come past me probably 10mph or more than I am travelling. Their vans are usually snaking about and I wonder if they even know. Looking at the drivers they usually seem to be more senior in years. I have also seen a few in the outside lane. Personally I think 60 is a safe limit for my outfit. Although I often tuck in behind an HGV or coach to save on fuel and stress.

We had a conversation as to why people have this outfit. This is not a critisism but a genuine question - why do people tow a car behind a motorhome instead of towing a caravan with a car? I get the need to be more mobile if settled for a few days (i.e he hassle of packing up everytime you want to buy a pint of milk - I have had a motorhome and a campervan) but what is the benefits of a motorhome with car as opposed to a car and caravan! In fact I will post this on a new thread so as not to hijack this one!
Motor homes have the benefits of on board water and waste tanks and have road tax so can be used anywhere, right up in the alps for example. But then if they are too big you can't just stop in a car park. I had ambitions to get a motor home but firstly the economics didn't work out. For what I paid for my 7 year old caravan I might have got a 25 year old motor home and all the problems you get with a 25 year old vehicle. Subsequently after buying a caravan and seeing the comparative lack of space inside and the polava every time the occupants need to go out I am glad I have a caravan. I have 2 children also so space is important. I guess it's also about showing ones wealth to an extent. Stopped at a place recently and a couple and their daughter rocked up in a motor home so big that it didn't fit on a touring pitch. They parked it diagonally on the tent area forcing one poor guy to move his tent. They didn't have a car behind so would have been stuck on their pitch for the weekend.
