We are dog owners, sometimes we camp with our dog, sometimes we don't but the one thing that really annoys us as responsible dog owners is the lack of respect for site rules from the "my dog is ok" brigade! If you are not prepared to a) Keep your dog under control - it stays on your pitch unless you are with it or b) Not leave it whimpering in your tent/caravan whilst you go for a night out in the clubhouse, then don't take it with you!

To be honest in my 35 years of caravanning ive never came across a dog that has been a pest by barking etc.But i can imagine how annoying a dog barking next to your van can be.

Unfortunately there are always those who think the rules don't apply to them.

I've never been bothered by a dog barking although I was on a rally last year when one of our party was asked not to leave his dog in his caravan because it barked and someone had complained. He was next to me and I hadn't heard it!

Yep, you often get someone who doesn't think the dogs must be on a lead rule applies to their dog or more frequently using an extending lead with the dog 10 metres away doing whatever it wants. On a recent visit to a CC site a van opposite us had two dogs left in alone the entire day, it was one of the hot days at the end of June and although the owners had left the large roof window fully open it must have been very warm inside. Both dogs barked almost continuously, the site warden was over a couple of times looking in the window checking on them, apparently both were in separate dog crates. Warden did come over and speak with the owners on their return., presumably regarding the dogs. They left the next day but whether that was already planned or not I don't know..

I was just about to ask that artel....

As 'Dogs die in hot cars' as the saying goes....

Would a caravan get just as hot as a car inside??

Sue I can see you are a responsible owner. We were on a site about 3 years ago next to a motorhome with 2 dogs. Left them in motor whilst off to pub. Dogs stood on seats in cab with one on drivers seat and paws on horn blasting away for best part of an hour. They were asked to leave on return.

I'd like to think that, if I'd have been the site owner, I'd have had the balls to break in to said motorhome, let the dogs out (after finding their leads, of course), and found them some shade and water... then asked them to leave, upon their return!

Thank you all for your comments, I agree, caravans must surely get as hot as cars,I know our tent does! My concern is also that dogs allowed to roam may leave an undesireable present for someone to step in, and there are always children on most sites at any time of the year!

We were once on seasonal pitch and the people next to us stayed all season i.e lived in the van. The children were home schooled (I never saw any schooling) and instead of a dog they had 2 parrots that lived in a cage in the awning, squawked all day, were obviously left alone when the owners went out at all and then were taken for a walk round the site every evening sitting on the owners shoulders and still squawking. They were asked to leave at the end of the season but by that time we had also left. The kids (14 & 16 year olds) would charge around on their bikes all day and if mother had to go anywhere the 5 mph didn't apply. Absolutely horrific.

I thought you were not supposed to leave dogs anyway? We have 3 cats as we can not be at home for a dog, when we go away we take them with us. Yes we leave them in the van when out but with as much shade and cool air including fan going but also we don't go out for long. If we go out and it is cloudy then warms up we go back asap.

However we have recently had issues with a site we have been going to for years as a dog owner complained about the cat's being on leads outside the van, in a nice way saying they didn't trust what there dog would do if it got out and got hold of one of our cats. It was half way through our hols they came back mid afternoon with there dog and they didn't feel they could leave there dog in the awning whilst one in the van and one out doing van chores. Just on our way back from a site where we had 2 families and a dog on pitch next to us and they were happy with the cat's being on our pitch and if need be in view of there dog.

Guess ain't nothing stranger than folk!
