Hi all, have run my vans with just the black 7 pin plug,
all I need is the exterior lighting. I am buying a van with ATC, does anyone know if I can run the new van on a lights only basis and not activate the ATC. or will it screw the wiring up..Trying to get a definitive answer,
some say you get some sort of feed back. As I see it,the black 7 pin only works the exterior lighys, so how can it affect caravan systems? many Thanks. Geoff.

Yep, I thought that.....I was just wondering if I run with black 7 pin (ATC not actvated), if it would do any harm to the system..Would a tow bar fitter be able to replace 7 pin black with a 13 pin eg rewire or remove and rewire

We got a new car recently and they only fitted a single 7 pin socket despite asking for a 13 pin. As we were booked we took the van anyway without ATC or fridge etc. it was fine but at my earliest opportunity I got the electrics converted.
Given what can go wrong with caravans I'd rather have ATC on. A tow bar fitter will probably charge £85 to change the electrics. That's what we were quoted from a place in Durham.
OH is at work, but we had ATC on our old van and we had to use an adapter as my car only has one socket.
We will be selling the adapter as will be picking up our new to us car tomorrow and have had 13amp electrics done as it didn't have a tow bar fitted, we have ATC on our new van too. Why would you not want to use such a safety feature?
Worth checking your insurance too. I would expect if the van has it and you don't connect it you could invalidate your insurance. We have it and I wouldn't tow without it now, it's amazing how many times you feel it activate to assist keeping you safe.
The key elements of the supplemental socket (and the extra pins in the 13 pin euro socket) are the feeds and returns for battery charging, and for running a fridge - so 4 extra wires, which need to be thicker than the roadlight wires because they carry a lot more current.
ATC uses the battery charging feed and return wires, which are permanently live, so don't need the car ignition turned on.
The feed for the fridge only operates when the engine is running.
It's imperative that when adding these 4 extra wires that they are the right gauge (2.5 sq mm), and the feed wires need to run all the way back to the car battery, not piggy back on other feeds at the back of the car, and the return wires are securely earthed to the car chassis.
Edit: No harm will be done if the ATC isn't activated.
Many thanks for the response. I am ringing round for quotes for changing to 13 pin, wont be able to check its ok till end of August when I pick van up. I am a bit paranoid about people messing about with car electrics, but I guess if you get a specialist company, you have to put your trust in them!!! Does the hitch still have friction pads in it, or are they redundant with ATC?

The AL-KO hitch will still have friction pads - this is the primary stability mechanism.
ATC is a secondary stability mechanism that normally doesn't come into play, only in extreme circumstances like the beginning of a snake, when it will apply the caravan brakes to bring it back into line.
We had the same scenario, car only had black 7 pin and van (Bailey) had grey 7 pin and black 7 pin. Towed it home (250 miles) just using black 7 pin but got a guy to fit a grey 7 pin to the car. I was also worried about insurance validation and wanted the extra stability of ATC. We plan at some stage to change our tow car (Nissan Pathfinder to either Range Rover or Discovery) so didn't bother with 13 pin.

"The AL-KO hitch will still have friction pads - this is the primary stability mechanism." No. It will make very little difference to the stability.

Is there a reason why you do not want to activate the ATC which is a safety feature?
On a recent trip, we hit a bit of odd tarmac at exactly the same time a truck passed us, the caravan started to snack (1st proper on we have had) and it was amazing how quickly the ATC brought it back under control. I would want to use the system if it was there.
