They may not take the mover into account. ...if they do write it off, then get the mover off quick.

Update.

Agreed a price with the insurance company - not including mover, so paid our local mobile man to remove it. Mover is now sitting in our garage and will be on ebay in the Spring 2016.

The salvage people came and towed away the Hymer.   Upsetting really - only you fellow caravanners will appreciate this. I was so sad as I watched it disappear into the distance.

The only consolation is that we had decent insurance cover. C&CC were helpful, if long winded, and we ended up recovering a large proportion of our original purchase price, when considering we had owned the van for almost 6 years this was not bad going. Buying that German van was definitely a good move financially.

I am now looking on the net for a replacement Hymer as it feels strange not owning a caravan, but I'm in no rush to buy a replacement and anything we do end up buying will have to be another Hymer. We have had a tourer for the past 10+ years, knowing it was there for weekends away when we wanted, frequent trips to the storage for cleaning/checking etc.   Just feels odd not having our van available to us.

If anyone sees a decent one for sale (preferably 2 berth post 2004 Hymer with end bathroom) let me know.

I have mentioned to some friends of mine from Rawtenstall, Lancashire who might be thinking of selling their 2 Berth Hymer Nova with end bathroom ( 2007 Nova 470 IIRC ?? ).

They are currently in Spain in it though and for the next 2 months or so I think.

I have sent them a link to this thread.

Quote: Originally posted by Patches on 17/8/2015We are looking at around a 3 month wait for some of the parts, which have to come in from Germany, one of which is a "special order" i.e. not in stock and has to be made to order.

We don't have a new for old policy as this is not possible for a van of this age - new 4 berth Hymer would be the thick end of 30k, but I think the C&CC valuation of market value at around £6500 is fair.

I am assuming from the above comments that if the insurance write it off, they will arrange for it to be sold on for spares/repair at a local auction and as you say, this could be done far cheaper using used parts and replacements from other sources and would be a project for someone wanting a decent van at a bargain price. Even if they break it for spares, it would bring in a few hundred for the insurance company. The mover on it's own is worth a a few quid (Powertorch). I assume they take this into account when assessing whether or not to write it off.

I want them to write it off. Then we have to decide whether or not to replace it. If we do, then to my mind, I would want another Hymer - not easy to find with the right spec/layout at the right price but having had a Hymer, I wouldn't really want to buy anything else. They are that good, honest. Practical, well designed and built like a tank. I only wish I could afford to buy a brand new one and keep it in a storage facility like fort knox.

double check your C&CC policy the mover may be covered as an extra the £6500 may be the value of the van without extras so you could remove the mover & resell it & check to see if your policy is for "guaranteed value" Ie this guarantees what you paid for the van if you bought it from a dealer This is the C&CC cover that I had .
C&CC cover comes in 3 parts value of van ,value of extras, value of personal possessions

Is this your old 'van? It was auctioned & didn't reach reserve & then put on as classified ad. Appears to be now sold.

There was a scam going around a few years ago where cars were stripped by low lifes. The car body or what was left of it then ended up being scrapped and sold. The low lifes woudl then buy the shell and rebuild the vehicle and then legally register the car in theri name and sell it on. I wonder if this could happen with caravans?

They auctioned it first here & it failed to reach reserve. So they put in as a classified ad as in earlier link & presumably it sold?

Yes see it now, they must have sold it on the classified ad for the asking price. There were 34 bids on the original listing when it was being auctioned.

I knew the insurance would sell it on for salvage but am very surprised to see how much they got for it.

Told you it was a lovely van until the you know whos trashed it. Wonder who bought it?

I would guess the salvage company made a cash offer to your insurer & then they sold it on for a profit. Insurers just want shot of their write offs so they have arrangements with scrappies to collect them direct. That seller often lists written off caravans.

Nice project for someone, lovely van for the money

See if you can find storage who will let you cover your van out of season, I've seen a few around here. Then the scummers can't see what you have. Ours is on our drive but it would be hard for anyone to get it out without using the mover and we cover it so they have no idea what we have.

Its been interesting following this thread. I didnt know German vans were 'targets' particularly. Ironically, you dont see many decent German vans on the continent!

Have to say though, 4 months for the insurance to settle is poor. If this had happened early Spring, the OP would have lost most of the season, if not all, waiting for the cash to replace the old van.

Also have to say, if i couldnt have ours at home, i dont think id caravan. Storage is too dear, too inconvenient, and often too risky. Hope the OP finds another before too long.

Two ways of looking at storage at home, convenience and cost is one, big sign the house is empty when van is away is the other. I've done both, but been on a gold storage for the last 10 odd years.

Same here. we have only ever been burgled once and that was with the caravan on the drive. If you live on a dodgy street with lots of burglars on it then it may be different.
