Hi folks
We are travelling from Cheshire to North Norfolk in the coming weeks and I estimate it will take 6 hours or so. We are therefore looking for a half decent place to stop for lunch. Having a couple of Mini Schnauzers, one only 13 weeks old currently, we will have a bite to eat in the van.

Our route will likely be via the M6 to the A14 then turn north at Thrapston onto the A605 heading for Kings Lynn to then get on the A149 and A148. (unless someone advises us differently?)

I estimate lunch time will be between Kettering and Peterborough if we leave home about 09.30.
Anybody any ideas on stopping places that don't include being rocked to sleep by passing traffic?

Cheers

John & Val

Depending on where you are going in N.Norfolk, consider : M6-A14 continue to Newmarket then pick up A11 and then the B1065 to N. Norfolk. Once on the 1065 there are quite a few stopping places and a few are well off the road. Remember whatever route you take Lorry drivers prefer the larger lay byes.

Hi Vic
I am trying to avoid Norwich as we are heading for just south of Cromer and a site called Deer's Mead.
Just trying to target some decent lay byes.

why would you be going via kettering/peterbro? ok depending on where in Cheshire but an example of leaving chester to cromer would mean going via the a50/a453/a52/a17/a149/a148 being your best route in any case going any where near Norwich would mean you have gone well off route

Vic's route will avoid Norwich, The B1065 leaves the A11 at Barton Mills Roundabout, just a mile from where I live. Whichever way you will still be around Kettering at the same time. Not sure about laybys, but there is a small services at the A14/A605 junction. Looking at Google earth they appear top have about 5 caravan bays in the car park.

We live in Winsford in Cheshire.
The reason for going around on the M6 - A14I I suppose is due to our motorhome experience on the A50. Almost deafened us and my tinitus rang loudly for 3 days. One of the reasons we only kept it for 6 months but that's another story!!!!.
I know most of that route from our early days when we travelled to the broads via Congleton - Leek - Derby - Nottingham and Kings Lynn. I suppose I am being lazy as well looking to minimise single carraigeway's. Having routed it on My Maps I now see Nottingham and Grantham are by-passed which was another reason for swinging south.
Also on my maps there is 33 miles difference or 12 minutes not allowing for towing so time wise the southern route may be better with the 'van on the back.

I wasn't being nosey asking where you live by the way. I drive down to Norfolk regularly - going again next month - and was just wondering if there might be an alternative route for you. I personally wouldn't go M6/A14, done it once and found it very tedious, but looking at the map book I can see you're not that far from the M6 anyway. It would seem that your own route or that suggested by The Vicar would be about the best, though I'm not really familiar with any lay-bys.

If your travelling on a saturday you need to avoid the A47 from Peterboro to Kings Lynn as the traffic can be horendous. It causes the A17 approaching Lynn to back up as well. Good luck. I live and work nearby and avoid the area like a plague on a Saturday

Hi Darthillcat
Yes we were looking at that route and the little chef looks ideal but with the dogs maybe not. With the pup we are still not sure about leaving her for long in the car and if we got a hot day it would be a none starter. I will have a look for the lay bye on google earth.

Cheers

Your route is fine, it's the one we took. The A14/A605 junc has the little chef and good parking due to their beig a travel lodge too. Come off A14 slip road at Junc 13 & it's left straight into services then left again. When you are done, out of the services left onto A605.
