Hi,
So, after tent camping for 27 years we have bought Hector, a 1993 Elddis Wisp 350/2 and he's a beaut. Any tips please about companies happy to insure an older caravan? Many thanks, Bev

Google "compare caravan insurance" and get lots of quotes.
I did this and got insured for £200, not the £350+ the big boys would have charged.
One thing no-one here can say is that because a particular company gave them a good deal they would also give you a good deal. That's not how it works.

If you wrote off a late 80s/early 90s caravan insurance unlikely to give you more than a couple £100s so hardly worth insuring, I don't insure my 80s 'van. You are insured for 3rd party risks while towing on your car insurance anyway.
Just a reminder for those that are new to caravanning.
Make sure you inform your Car insurance company that you have a towbar fitted and will be towing a caravan.
Its classed as a modification to your car.

My last two insurance companies said it didn't matter. But I suppose there will be ones out there that it does.

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I would imagine that it would matter if you had a claim whilst towing, if you had not informed them.
Better safe than sorry, especially with Insurance companies.
I change my car Insurance provider almost every year, only way to get a good deal nowadays imo.
Maybe it has changed but years ago it was a requirement and was told it came under modifications. If not asked I will volunteer the info and they have never said it does not matter but as you say some don't seem to be bothered..

If you use an insurance comparison website make sure you look at the excess fee as quite often they boast about how low their quotes are but never tell you what the real cost is if you have to make a claim. Some even offer cash back gimmicks but they get their money back in hidden expenses so I never encourage them and search for my own insurance. My caravan is currently insured with Saga which caters for the over 50's and have also had caravan insurance with Caravan Guard as they have a good reputation for customer care and settling claims within a reasonable time scale.
Good advice,I do the same. I know what I want and don't want in my insurance cover, so I base all my quotes with the same criteria.
For example I don't need a courtesy car should my car be in for repair, so why pay for it but I do like no claims bonus protected. Although haven't needed to claim for over 30 yrs.
I was also with Saga for car and caravan but as with all companies it can go up substantially some years for car insurance, so I look elsewhere.
I have found if you are so called new business with insurance companies you can always get a better deal which your existing company seem unable to compete with like for like.
I still have caravan insurance with Saga as they are hard to beat cover/price wise.

Just recently renewed my caravan insurance with Club Care through the CCC. £68.30 for our 1988 Elddis.
Checked when first insuring, and again at renewal time this year, and they were definitely the best deal for us. Being retired I expected Saga to be good, however if they offered insurance which they may not have done due to the age of the van, they were obviously dearer than Club Care. We found that many insurers will not cover vans over 20 years old, and ours is 27.
