A DOZY motorist who cut a caravan in half in order to use it as a makeshift trailer found himself in trouble with the police.
Plymouth officers attended a layby on the A38 heading towards Marsh Mills at about midday on Saturday, where they found the modified caravan attached to a broken down car.
“He had bought a caravan for £25, cut the roof off it and had every intention of driving it all the way to the M5 at Exeter.
“He had written the number plate on with a pen, but missed a digit off by accident.
“There was one piece of rope holding the sides from falling out on to the road, the lights were not working, the tyres had cracked and were not roadworthy.
“What he was planning was even more worrying – he was planning to use it as a trailer for a conservatory, so he would have filled it with glass and driven it back.”
PC Beckhurst says he has dealt with many incidents involving caravans on the road, but nothing like this.
“This really was a case of someone just not thinking things through at all, endangering other road users through his decisions.”
PC Pablo Beckhurst found the man was also driving without insurance.
The caravan was impounded and the driver faces six penalty points on his licence for driving without insurance.
