only asking the question to see if anyone else has had my negative experience just today,
happily bought an Abbey Iona through one of the free sales sites 3 days ago.tried to register it today with cris, been registered since new in 1999.
told I would need a report from an 'approved, dealer/engineer ' even though van was serviced in August.. Insured van,no bother,
cris stated there had been a cat D claim on van some years ago so I needed a new report.Last three owners knew nothing about the repair!
Have sent copy of service report to cris and questioned the value of registering at all!
I reckon it's £15 gives piece of mind and helps sell it in the end. I wasnt too impressed paying £14 to do a cris check and all you get is not reported stolen no out standing finance and that's it, but I reckon the more people support it the more the norm it will be and I wouldn't buy a second hand van without checking it so you'll prob need to resell anyway.

As you have found, trying to register as a new owner of an older van is not really worth it, previous owners often do not bother to register & it could have been much worse for you. The caravan could have been stolen several owners ago when fairly new & the insurance company who paid out on the original claim could have claimed it back off you.
So answer your question, if you buy an older 'van cheap off ebay etc that previous owner has not bothered to register with Cris then probably best to let sleeping dogs lie...
If you are paying a fair bit for a newer 'van then check it with Cris before you pay owner for it, afterwards might be too late.
The last Cris registered owner obviously new it had been repaired and maybe did not want the new owners to know.
Had you checked with Cris before you bought the van you would have know it had been damaged.
If you want to resell at some point and you don't mention the repair the new owners may check themselves.
Usually numbers on the windows.
I previously owned a caravan that was cat D write off for cosmetic damage. CRIS need to know the van has been repaired to an acceptable standard before putting it back on the register. A damaged insurance write off is worth less than a repaired van.
management atCRIS have agreed to look at last service report of the van rather than me pay for another engineers report.I agree that with a van of the age I have bought (1999) it probably not worth the bother of registering.the last 3 owners knew nothing about the 'damage' Cris have changed their policy over the last few years.
Off caravanning again, I have 2 tents for sale now and a lot of camping equipment if anyone is interested
I have a 1999 year caravan and I registered mine with CRIS because at least they know I am the legal owner should I have to prove that at all in the future for any particular reason. It's no different to having your pet dog micro-chipped because at least the Police can then trace the animal to it's rightful owner if they ever have to which is exactly the same principal as the CRIS registration scheme.
I get a CRIS cert when I buy, then notify them by email that I have bought it. They reply telling me to pay up and they will register it in my name. I print their reply and clip it on my CRIS Cert as proof to next buyer that it is legit.
Can't see a need to pay anything really.
