How do I test the 12n plug on my van using a multimeter ?
When towing as I braked the panel lights dimmed to almost out. When I arrived home I discovered that the two rear lights of my car had blown . Short somewhere ?

I'd check the cars socket first then if that's all ok check the caravan. The majority of caravans have there own fuses for road lights somewhere inside normally towards the front which will blow.

First job, check all fuses and bulbs are ok. Car and caravan.
Check for a good connection between the socket and plug. Over time the pins get compressed and fail to make a good contact, using a small screwdriver, GENTLY open the pins slightly. BE CAREFUL, they do not require much force to break them and do not need opening a large amount!
Check for a poor earth, either a broken wire or corrosion in the plug or light fitting. A simple visual check by dismantling can easily spot this.
If all looks ok then get out the test gear and a wiring diagram. You will need to check the continuity of the wiring from the plug to the lights, you will probably need a length of wire to extend the probe and some help. Don't forget to test any side or marker lights too. One probe on the pin in the plug, the other at the corresponding point in the light fitting. If you find a fault, trace the wiring back to see if there are any connections or fuses and test again at that point until you isolate the problem.
For the car socket, test for continuity between each of the pins.Pick one pin, place one probe on it, activate it's function and then check all the others, do this for all pins. Any reading indicates a fault in the socket, each pin should be separate from the other, possible exception is the light pins, which will depend on your cars wiring.

You can buy a tester (see link) which will test both car and caravan circuits which may be of help and a lot easier that testing with a meter.

regarding the plug on the van, I have learned from experience that replacing the blooming thing is a lot easier than faffing about with pins etc, they are a couple of quid. the blowing of your car's lights is a funny one, I have seen dodgy van wiring blow car fuses but not bulbs

the fun really starts if you have an internal short in the van wiring as rewiring towing lights is a major pain mainly due to the high level lights and the fact that so much is hidden. the bosh is to run new wiring inside with the wiring to the high levels running outside of wallboards. not rocket science but it can be "fun"
