First job, check all fuses and bulbs are ok. Car and caravan.
Check for a good connection between the socket and plug. Over time the pins get compressed and fail to make a good contact, using a small screwdriver, GENTLY open the pins slightly. BE CAREFUL, they do not require much force to break them and do not need opening a large amount!
Check for a poor earth, either a broken wire or corrosion in the plug or light fitting. A simple visual check by dismantling can easily spot this.
If all looks ok then get out the test gear and a wiring diagram. You will need to check the continuity of the wiring from the plug to the lights, you will probably need a length of wire to extend the probe and some help. Don't forget to test any side or marker lights too. One probe on the pin in the plug, the other at the corresponding point in the light fitting. If you find a fault, trace the wiring back to see if there are any connections or fuses and test again at that point until you isolate the problem.
For the car socket, test for continuity between each of the pins.Pick one pin, place one probe on it, activate it's function and then check all the others, do this for all pins. Any reading indicates a fault in the socket, each pin should be separate from the other, possible exception is the light pins, which will depend on your cars wiring.
