Hi everyone, new to the forum and in need of a bit of advice. We have tent camped for years and now looking to upgrade to a caravan. We have seen one at a good price but the vendor was honest and advised that the front gas locker lid was missing for a few months and the locker was exposed to the elements. He has replaced this now. He said there is no apparent damp inside the van. What are your opinions on this? It is located 2.5 hour drive from us. We have a damp meter but are afraid it will turn out to be a wasted journey if it turns out to be riddled with damp.
Would water have penetrated the van from the gas locker enough to cause major damp?
Water in the gas locker should not get into caravan bodywork. Gas locker will be ventilated below so any water will run out. You need to check that gas locker has been fixed properly though or it will spoil look of caravan.

A 5 hour round trip for a caravan that has had damage left un-repaired for a number of months would put me off. If you are in no rush to buy a caravan, wait and see what becomes available closer to home.
Put that damp meter to work on every caravan you look at regardless of how nice it appears or how long the journey is. Damp is a killer of caravans unless you have good DIY skills, endless spare time, and a bank account like Paul Getty.
Thanks everyone. Think it's worth a look. Good price. Starter van so not worried about cosmetic. Just damp. And if u reckon water in gas locker doesn't affect the internal van, that's put my mind at ease somewhat. The guy I'm buying van off bought it from his neighbour with lid missing. They had given up using it, hence why he bought it. Thought this time of year better to get a good deal as heard prices go up at lot in spring with people buying for the season. Also hoping to surprise the kids for Xmas.
Our 1999 Bailey ranger had a removable lid so maybe it just blew off en-route if they didn't fasten it properly. Maybe innocent. Probably not an easy thing to get hold of quickly especially for an older van.
The floor of our locker has been plastic so no problem for us but depends on the construction of the van you are buying.
I'd ask him to check for damp properly himself. TBH he actually sounds an honest type - a "wide boy" just wouldn't have mentioned about the locker lid in the first place.
Given that the locker will have floor vents to allow gas to escape, I wouldn't have thought have thought it would be a big problem, unlike, say, a roof hatch.

I,m sure i saw that on ebay just about 6 weeks ago wheniwas looking for mine .check past sales on ebay .if it is ,he got it for an absolute song and is selling it straight on .That would also explain why it was left open, hes just bought it
If his neighbour didn't use it and he then bought it with locker lid missing, and now he is not using it and selling it - I would be wary a little. take a damp meter. if water ingress into the locker, it can affect the van if gets into van front wall or worse the floor.
