What's the normal sequence of events when' trading in a caravan?
I want to change my 2007 ranger 550/6 for a twin axle caravan. Sterling Europa 590, abbey vogue 600, lunar eclipse FB etc. Fixed bunks rear washroom Etc.

So far all enquiries I have made to Ads in auto trader etc have been answered with "sorry it's sold mate".

Where I live is a bit of a caravan dealer vacuum or at least dealers selling larger caravans so looks like I will have to travel.

Any way I don't really want to tow my van round the dealers every time especially if I am driving 100 miles each way.

Is it the done thing to see a caravan then make a deal against a hypothetical trade in value ( I have been given some by email although from dealers who had sold the caravans I enquired about ) then re negotiate when the dealer sees my trade in?

What happens?

From my experience dealers are happy to propose a trade in based on your description. They would check it over on receipt and knock you down if it doesn't match

Only thing I would say is don't PX though, eBay will achieve significantly more than a trade -in for a good van. We made over £3k more than our px offer

We recently px'd our old 1998 Compass Rallye for a newer van. We were given a price based on our description and the blue book value (whatever the caravan equivalent is) as we were on holiday at the time we invited the salesman over to see the van set up. When we completed the deal he still had not seen our van but he said to us that as it was older than 2000 they would not sell it anyway but pass it on. We probably could have got more on ebay but as our van was stored on the site we like he arranged to deliver our new van and pick up the old van. First they saw of it would have been after they delivered ours. It saved us all the hassel of taking our van off the site advertising then actually going through all the silly phone calls (previously sold a van on ebay) and ofcourse the time wasters.

We have always been quoted trade in prices based on our descriptions and questions asked by the dealer and have never had a problem when turned up to collect the new van and leave the old one.
On one occasion a dealer did want us to part with our van immediately and wait for the new one - no deal made as he wasn't prepared to pay us the p/ex price on receipt of our van; we went elsewhere.

Dealers not been bothered about seeing the trade in. They give such a low price they sell it for double anyway so loads of money built in if there's a problem.

Ours always quoted a price for the new with and without the trade in. If we could sell privately while we waited for the new one we could. If not they would take it.

Trade in price is largely irrelevant in a deal - price to change is what matters when comparing deals. We are getting a new van in February and the trade in was actually only just below retail prices I'd checked before negotiations, we also got discount on the new van and some not insignificant other bits i.e. a mover and solar panel.
