I feel the same and never had a problem getting a pitch by phoning site direct, a couple of days before our dates or even on the day.
It can show full on the C.C. website but phoning the site as I said , usually gets a pitch due to late cancellations or as you say some people have not bothered phoning to cancel.
We spent 21 nights on C.C. sites this year and did not prebook any and not just midweek dates.

Getting a last minute reservation direct with the site might be nothing to do with late cancellations or no shows but perhaps more to do with warden offset. Only about 95% of pitches are available via online booking the remaining ones are controlled by the warden to allow for emergencies. Obviously as you get nearer the time and no problems on the horizon the wardens can allow those pitches to be occupied.
I dare say that could be the case but most times when I phone they say they have had a cancellation or a no show, so pitch available.
Maybe they are just saying they have a cancellation, who knows.
