I used to book up but having several bad holidays due to bad weather I now go with the weather forecast and phone up for vacancies at the last minute. When your wife has a disability needing a wheelchair most days the weather can make all the difference.

No plans yet regarding WHERE we go but all sorted as to WHEN.
We usually make a last minute decision based on weather forecast and have been known to leave it as late as when we get off the ferry in Calais.........that's the bonus of camping/caravanning.
For the last few years I've found the ASCI Eurocamping website to be extremely useful - especially now the PC translates the reviews.
Over time I've found the Dutch to be the most fastidious and demanding of all campers (at the risk of generalising), so I tend to find out where they like the best and go to those campsites. It hasn't let me down yet, especially in avoiding the big commercial sites and finding little gems.
UKcampsites is also getting more reviews from abroad, which I will certainly help along.

We are going to Australia for 6 weeks soon, but when we return we will be sorting out ferries, probably go June,July for a month or more.
Where we go depends on weather and how we feel!
We may come back home for the school holiday season, and return end of August for a little longer, using ACSI !
Did it last year and it worked well, now retired so no peak season prices for us!

Yes I booked Easter weekend and summer holiday last weekend. I thought caravanning was all about "hitch up and go" but not so if you have school age kids family's needs to consider.
We are tied to the summer holidays so have to go at peak times. Last year we did Cornwall and in January all of the coastal sites were booked up so eventually stayed inland. Wasn't a bad situation in the end because our campsite was so quiet and the coastal ones looked busy and packed.
This year we are going to Loir or the vendee. I tried to book a site we liked the look of and it was already full, then our second choice was also full so had to choose from what was left. It also seemed that some ferry routes for the dates we wanted were also fully booked. We had to take an alternative route and time. Reading some of the posts on here about ferry bookings the good folk of uk campsite are booking them in November.
Of course the channel tunnel always has plenty of space and is £500 cheaper than the Plymouth roscoff route I am taking. However it's not handy for the vendee but probably wouldn't take much longer door to door.
I used to go all over Europe on my motorbike and never booked anything ahead other than the tunnel. But I did stay in some really rough campsites.
We've found coastal Vendee sites to be well overpriced and commercialised with tiny pitches; the French flock there during summer to the extent that roads can be blocked. The SW coast of Brittany slightly north of the Vendee has, I've found, nicer sites but still with pool complexes etc. that children require.
The Loire Valley is one of my favourite bits of France, but then most bits are my favourite.

Hi hairywol
We booked Vendee, which is classed as pays de loir (I think) in the hope of better weather. The more inland and quieter looking sites we liked were already full. We are stopping near Roscoff on the way and the way back and the site looks better than the site in vendee but I am hoping for better weather further south.
Both our uk "summer" caravan holidays last year were plagued by bad weather. Although looking at almanacs for vendee for the last 2 years the weather has been poor hope this changes.
I'm a teacher so we always book. We've had a couple of years of full campsites due to bad weather in uk, so we always spend a few days before christmas looking and booking.
We've gone for a few small farm sites for 2016 and one big site in the alpes. We should stay at about 5 different sites on the way through france. Usually ending up by the Italian border.
We've booked dieppe to newhaven to come back to avoid any incidents that may arise!
Just want to get going soon but the site where we keep our van is pretty wet due to all the rain. Will probably wait till easter now.

Peterws I always start booking ours as well in October, and tonight booked green acres for 7 nights, 1st week in October for £72-00. They have some great deals on and it would cost more for most cl,cs in Derbyshire with hookup for 7 nights, with all the add on's. The Haven price is for up to 6 people, dog, awning, euro pitch. Wonder if you still get a free weekend after 3 bookings, so got 21 nights in all for less than £300-00 and hopefully a free weekend aswell.
