When our kids were young and we were short of money we started off by buying a cheap tent, and taking everyday pots and pans, bedding ect out of our house to use until we could afford better equipment. We lived off cold finger foods, and boiled the kettle on a small canister of gas with one of those backpackers tripods over it to form a hob.
Site fees were around £3 a night to camp on a basic farmers field with toilets and a single shower set up in the end of a disused cow shed, or on one site they were in a 'lean to' at the side of the owners house, and cold water only.
This prompted us to buy a washing up bowl for having a warm strip wash curtosy of a kettle of hot water being added to a gallon of cold, a big bath sponge to swill the kids down whilst they stood in it, and the bowl also doubled as a paddling pool and water play toy on a hot day, but was always kept for human washing and never the dishes or the kitchen stuff, we kept a separate one for that, which also doubled to keep the milk fresh during day by standing the then glass milk bottles in it filled with cold water. The kids loved it, and have all gone on to become campers themselves now with young families of their own.
A caravan can be an expensive thing to run and repair, even if it was an old one and donated for free, a tent is the much cheaper option, there are plenty of Cheap camping packages available from the large camping stores to be had, mostly with change out of £100 for the full starter kit brand new, or probably even cheaper if you have the time to look around the car boot sales and charity shops, freecycle ect, to find equipment secondhand.
