Hi, picked up our van a couple of weeks back and only towed it into storage so far. Quick question its got an alko hitch, do I need one of those ball things in the hitch safety ball things when it's not in use? Saw them in gooutdoors and don't understand the purpose? Any recommendations on hitchlocks as I have only got wheel clamps at the moment.
The ball thingy just makes it harder for folk to tow it away when fitted in conjunction with an Alko hitchlock.
Which model of Alko hitch do you have.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!

With some Alko hitches you have to press a catch inside the ball receiver upwards before you can push the locking lever down ands it's easier to do this by pushing one of the balls in than by using your fingers.
If you haven't yet you should get a decent hitchlock (it'll save on insurance premiums), which will probably come with a ball to insert into your hitch. If not you should buy a ball.
Caravan thieves often use a hook to tow a caravan away, or a filed-down towball, so they don't have to disable a hitchlock to nick the 'van. It's dangerous but what do they care?
Filling the hitch with a ball stops them doing this.

Great thank you, I'll have to goto our local tow shop and get one of those locks, bought the van secondhand with everything I need barring a hitchlock, also one (of the two) sas wheelclamps has a barell missing so need to get another sorted. Its on a small secure site at the moment. Joining caracan and camp club tonight to sort insurance.
Basically the plastic ball is only used to close the Alko hitch in the tow postion so Alko lock can be fitted over handle and bottom of hitch to prevent towing away lock is suppose to rotate when you try to drill it out.
Insurance companies give lower premiums when fitted along with Alko wheel lock.
But not all vans have Alko chassis and hitch and some insurances only recognise these.
But other insurance companies recognise other brands of locks etc so long as they are GOLD secured other words meet certain standards.
But if you have the van a tea leaf has a order for or wants rest assured they will take it that's why you take out insurance.
I stayed on a site were the thieves stayed on site and came back later and removed a van from the storage part of site even with cameras installed and Alko locks on van.
