Hi all

I was hoping for some advice. my 7.5tonne horsebox currently has an Avtex 16 inch digital LCD TV/DVD player installed. it is connected to a booster and the lorry has a nest/cage type aerial on the roof.

we have 12v power in the lorry running from a leisure battery and also the option to hook up. usually when I am away competing with my horses, I hook up as it gives us the option for heating and microwave in addition to the the gas cooker.

we find that when using the tv, if we move around the lorry the signal goes sticky for a bit until the lorry movement has stopped.

I have looked at replacing the aerial but it looks to be too much hassle and at a previous show I noticed a neighbouring lorry had a sky dish on a tripod parked outside their truck.

I was wondering if someone could advise if I can do this to my current set up? I noticed on ebay you can buy a dish (does size matter?) a signal finder (sounded useful) and tripod, plus a signal receiver/freesat box.

example here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIY-Sky-Caravan-HD-Freesat-Satellite-System-Complete-Set-Dish-Tripod-Receiver-/371672407572?hash=item568966de14:g:SrgAAOSwuzRXforb

can anyone advise if this would work? I have access to a plug next to the tv so can run it off 240v. how does the dish work? does it need power or does it get it from the cable that feeds into the tv (the tv runs off 12v leisure battery which the 240v hook up charges).

I am sorry for the long question but I really hope someone can advise (i am rubbish at these things).

many thanks in advance.

If your Avtex is reasonably modern then it will have a suitable satellite decoder built in for all mainstream UK free to view channels.
First check by seeing if "satellite" is an option in the TV's "source" menu.

Then it is, it's only necessary to get the dish with LNB, a tripod or other support and cable with connectors but we can guide on that.

Dish size matters but it can be and ideally should be a small one for here in the UK, again we can guide you.

If the set has no satellite decoder then you simply add a free standing one into the system; gets more messy with cables though.

thank you for your help

sadly it doesn't have satellite as an option.

it only has:

Digital TV
Analogue TV
DVD
SCART
HDM1
HDM2
VGA
USB

we are only ever likely to use it in the UK - mostly Scotland (maybe Ireland but unlikely anywhere else).

We have an Aldi one that does not need a sky card. There are others on E bay also that do not need a sky card

If by "suitable" you mean work, it is yes but IMO lumbering yourself with SKY is undersirable. Read the details re Sky on that link.

I would go down a "Freesat" [Trade Mark] route, there are lots of good decoders out there. When I am free to make further comment I will if not beaten to it by others.

We chucked sky years ago (at home) and got a humax free view recorder system.

Have a look on ebay for tripod mounted dishes* too, as that's what we use with the box in the van.

*Ours came as a kit complete with tripod, dish, free view box, cable, signal finder etc - basically everything you need to get going....

I'm posting on my phone here, but I have photos of our set up from just last week when we were away showing our dish outside the van, so I'll try and sort that once I'm home tonight....

If your tele goes awol when you move around, try your connection at the aerial. They get neglected.
