Hi Guys.

You may have read this type of post a few times. After a protracted divorce ive decided that id like ot live in the Van full time for a couple of years while i get back on my feet. I understand however that as i wil not be on an electoral role and paying council tax on a property i may find it difficult to get some pitches as i in effect have no fixed abode. I do not own my current property so i couldnt even use this one.

Has anyone else had experience of full timing and how i can go about confirming what sites would accept me for either a seasonal pitch or a 28 day stay .

We full timed for 2 1/2 years. We were able to stay on a seasonal site from February until end of December however we chose to move off to another site for December to February as nothing worse than moving during the winter. You will need a permanent address for your vehicle, driving licence and insurance so a relative will do. With the insurance tell them that the address is only a postal address and the car is kept elsewhere.

Thanks for your reply guys. How did you get around council tax. As i won't have a permanent address where im already paying it. Its s shame there isn't a scheme where full time tourers can't pay a nominal amount so it isn't an issue. Ive been led to believe that a lot of sites wont even let me pitch if i no longer have evidence.

There is no council tax payable unless you are on the site for more than 11 months as you are a temporary visitor.

My understanding from previously living in a caravan between selling and buying houses is that the rates paid by the site owner exempts you from paying council tax whilst on licensed holiday sites.

Cheers guys. Ive phoned one site who said i couldn't stay if i didn't have evidence of council tax or residence elsewhere so i suppose its a case of ringing directly and seeing who will accept. I spoke to the caravan club aswell and they would only give me membership to their sites if i had a uk address. Im certainly not trying to get out of paying what i owe but it does feel as though using the tourer is made hard to discourage people from doing it.

Think of it this way. If you are a site owner and a stranger phoned you would you tell them that they can stay for eleven months of the year? Not likey as it could be travellers or even the council doing a check. You need to visit the sites in person like we did when we were looking.

I do not know this lady but you might like to look at the archives of her blog
http://lovelygreyday.blogspot.co.uk/

She lived for nearly a year (I think) in a Knaus motorhome on a site, paid council tax etc., and was therefore able to be on the Electoral Roll.

My understanding (which is quite likely to be incorrect) is that if you're not on the Electoral Roll then you will have a devil's own job should you apply for any credit, or a new bank account, or anything 'official'.

Good luck getting back on your feet.

Could you not use a family members address as some others have done.

Hi Lovelygrey here.

Just to set the record straight. I lived in my van for nine months on a campsite but did not pay council tax. However I remained on the electoral role by using my friend's house as my postal address. As there was two of them living at the property it had not implications for their council tax bill.

I loved the experience of living in the motorhome and will do so again when my son has left home. He was twelve when he lived with me in the van and we got along nicely. I think that most important consideration is choosing an internal layout that works for permanent living. For example putting up tables/converting them in beds on a daily basis would lose its appeal on a long term basis. My motorhome also has three distinct living areas so we could get away from each other when needed. My blog has records of my experience. Just click the motorhome tab in labels.

Lovelygrey - Apologies for misremembering/not understanding your situation.

Thank you for sharing your experiences of living in the van which I found very interesting.
